Effect of fin number on the melting phase change in a horizontal finned shell-and-tube thermal energy storage unit

Xiaohu Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the enhanced heat transfer by adding longitudinal fins in a horizontal shell-and-tube heat storage unit. The results show that the number of fins greatly affects the melting time and increasing the number of fins weakens local natural convection. The study provides practical significance for engineering application research of phase change energy storage.

Metal foam/PCM melting evolution analysis: Orientation and morphology effects

Marcello Iasiello et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal conductivity performance of phase change materials and aluminum foams under different conditions, showing good agreement between experiments and numerical simulations. The results indicate that reducing porosity significantly reduces melting time, while PPI and orientation changes have minimal effects on the melting front.

Comparative Evaluation of Circular Truncated-Cone and Paraboloid Shapes for Thermal Energy Storage Tank based on Thermal Stratification Performance

Hitesh Khurana et al.

Summary: Geometrical configurations of thermal energy storage (TES) are crucial in enhancing system performances in solar water heating systems. This study focuses on choosing suitable TES tank geometry based on key performance parameters, and found that storage tanks with lower aspect ratio have better stratification performance. The findings provide guidelines for designing TES with improved thermal performance.

Influence of fin parameters on the melting behavior in a horizontal shell-and-tube latent heat storage unit with longitudinal fins

Hongyang Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the melting behavior of phase change material with longitudinal fins in a latent heat storage unit, utilizing two-dimensional models with natural convection and optimizing structural parameters. Strategies to improve heat transfer intensity in the hard-melting region at the bottom of the tube are implemented, demonstrating that thickening bottom fins and thinning top fins can accelerate the melting process.

Numerical analysis of the performance enhancement of a latent heat storage shell and tube unit using finned tubes during melting and solidification

Mohamed Amine Dekhil et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the melting and solidification processes in three horizontal storage units for Latent Heat Thermal Storage using water as phase change material and a water/glycol solution as the Heat Transfer Fluid. Different configurations were compared to improve thermal performance, with the addition of fins significantly increasing solidification and melting rates, especially in the configuration with longitudinal fins.

Unextractable fossil fuels in a 1.5 °C world

Dan Welsby et al.

Summary: Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement have pledged to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, but a sharp decline in fossil fuel use is required to keep the temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius. A global energy systems model shows that by 2050, 60% of oil and fossil methane gas, and 90% of coal must remain unextracted to stay within a 1.5 degrees Celsius carbon budget.
