Development and validation of the Reward Deficiency Syndrome Questionnaire (RDSQ-29)

Eszter Kotyuk et al.

Summary: The present study developed and tested a 29-item Reward Deficiency Syndrome Questionnaire (RDSQ-29) to assess the psychological and behavioral aspects of RDS. The questionnaire showed good fit and construct validity, and revealed strong relationship between sensation-seeking and the RDS scale.

The Roles of Serotonin in Neuropsychiatric Disorders

Mahsa Pourhamzeh et al.

Summary: The serotonergic system plays a crucial role in regulating various functions in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. Deficiencies in this system can lead to pathological conditions like depression and schizophrenia. Research highlights the involvement of serotonin in neuropsychiatric disorders and discusses potential new therapies based on molecular mechanisms.

Is addiction a brain disease? A plea for agnosticism and heterogeneity

Hanna Pickard

Summary: Despite the ongoing debate around the brain disease model of addiction (BDMA), conceptual clarification and initial empirical assessment suggest adopting an agnostic stance towards its validity and embracing heterogeneity in its application. In some cases, addiction may indeed be considered a brain disease, while in others it may not. Combatting addiction stigma is better approached by directly confronting moralism surrounding drugs and moralistic drug policies, rather than relying solely on the brain disease label.

Hypothesizing in the Face of the Opioid Crisis Coupling Genetic Addiction Risk Severity (GARS) Testing with Electrotherapeutic Nonopioid Modalities Such as H-Wave Could Attenuate Both Pain and Hedonic Addictive Behaviors

Ashim Gupta et al.

Summary: In the United States, nonaddicting/nonpharmacological strategies are available to effectively treat pain and manage chronic pain without opioids. The utilization of the Genetic Addiction Risk Severity (GARS) test and H-Wave can attenuate pain and help prevent addiction.

Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS) Surprisingly Is Evolutionary and Found Everywhere: Is It Blowin' in the Wind?

Kenneth Blum et al.

Summary: Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS) encompasses various mental health disorders and is characterized by abnormal behavior caused by a breakdown in reward neurotransmission. Recent studies have identified a significant overlap of dopaminergic gene risk polymorphisms in depressed and schizophrenic individuals. ADHD, PTSD, and spectrum disorders have also been linked to the neurogenetic and psychological underpinnings of RDS. It is believed that RDS may be a foundational aspect of species evolution and survival, influenced by multiple neurotransmitters and polymorphic loci.

FOXN3 and GDNF Polymorphisms as Common Genetic Factors of Substance Use and Addictive Behaviors

Andrea Vereczkei et al.

Summary: This study investigated genetic overlaps between different addictive behaviors, identifying associations between certain single-nucleotide polymorphisms and potentially addictive behaviors. FOXN3 and GDNF were highlighted as potential genetic risk factors for multiple addictive behaviors. Further studies are needed due to limitations such as convenience sampling and lack of structured substance use scales.

Why haven't we solved the addiction crisis?

Kenneth Blum et al.

Summary: The current addiction crisis has caused devastation and governments' efforts to solve the problem have not been successful. In order to address addiction, a novel approach involving genetic risk testing and brain health checks for youth is proposed. Characterizing preaddiction could incentivize the development of interventions to prevent and treat early indications of addiction.

Genetic susceptibility of opioid receptor genes polymorphism to drug addiction: A candidate-gene association study

Laith N. AL-Eitan et al.

Summary: The study found an association between the OPRM1 gene variant rs1799971 and drug addiction, as well as a genetic haplotype of this gene. Additionally, the risk of drug addiction may be influenced by the age of addicts, smoking, and marital status along with genetic variants within OPRM1, OPRD1, and OPRK1 genes.

Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS): A Cytoarchitectural Common Neurobiological Trait of All Addictions

Kenneth Blum et al.

Summary: Alcohol and other substance use disorders share comorbidity with other RDS disorders, such as a reduction in dopamine signaling within the reward pathway. Non-opioid treatments fare better than chronic opioid treatments. Research demonstrates that over 50 percent of all suicides are related to alcohol or other drug use.

Cannabis and synaptic reprogramming of the developing brain

Anissa Bara et al.

Summary: Recent years have seen an increased acceptance of cannabis use, leading to unintended neurodevelopmental implications, particularly in pregnant women, young mothers, and teens. The neurobiological effects of cannabinoid exposure during prenatal/perinatal and adolescent periods highlight impaired synaptic plasticity and the importance of epigenetic reprogramming for long-term impact. Sociopolitical changes and concerns surrounding the potential harm of cannabis for vulnerable populations, in addition to the epigenetic link for synaptic reprogramming, are discussed by Hurd and colleagues.
