A step forward, but still inadequate: Australian health professionals' views on the genetics and life insurance moratorium

Jane M. Tiller et al.

Summary: The survey found that the majority of Australian health professionals were aware of the partial ban on the use of genetic test results in life insurance underwriting, however, they still believed that there were shortcomings in this self-regulatory measure. While some HPs felt that the moratorium alleviated some genetic discrimination issues, most still had concerns about self-regulation, financial limits, and the temporary nature of the ban.

Barriers and Facilitators for Population Genetic Screening in Healthy Populations: A Systematic Review

Emily C. Shen et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that a small percentage of the US population unknowingly carry a genetic risk factor for common hereditary diseases. Population genetic screening can help identify these risk factors and prevent or mitigate the diseases. However, inadequate knowledge and limited understanding of the clinical benefits are major barriers to the widespread adoption of population genetic screening among healthcare providers and the public.

Motivations and barriers to pursue cancer genomic testing: A systematic review

Megan Smith-Uffen et al.

Summary: The study found that patients' motivations for pursuing cancer genomic testing include predicting cancer risk, informing disease management, benefiting families, and understanding cancer, while barriers include concerns about cost, privacy/confidentiality, clinical utility, and psychological harm. Despite concerns, consumers are interested in cancer genomic testing if it can provide actionable results for themselves and their families.

Impact of personal genomic risk information on melanoma prevention behaviors and psychological outcomes: a randomized controlled trial

Amelia K. Smit et al.

Summary: The study found that personalized genomic risk information did not influence sun exposure patterns, but it did improve some skin cancer prevention and early detection behaviors, reducing the risk of sunburn and increasing skin examinations among women. There was also a reduction in melanoma-related worry, without evidence of psychological harm overall.
