The association between vitamin B12 and plasma homocysteine levels with episodic memory and the volume of memory related brain structures in middle-aged individuals: a retrospective correlational study

Merve Cebi et al.

Summary: This study found that lower vitamin B12 and higher plasma homocysteine levels are associated with memory and brain volume in middle-aged adults. These findings suggest that these blood markers may serve as early biomarkers for predicting cognitive decline and neural loss.

Influences of Vitamin B12 Supplementation on Cognition and Homocysteine in Patients with Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Cognitive Impairment

Asako Ueno et al.

Summary: Vitamin B-12 deficiency is associated with cognitive impairment, but the effectiveness of vitamin B-12 supplementation in recovering cognition remains controversial. A study found that vitamin B-12 supplementation improved short-term cognitive function and reduced homocysteine levels in patients with vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Cerebral small vessel disease mediates the association between homocysteine and cognitive function

Zhenjie Teng et al.

Summary: This retrospective study investigated the association between serum total homocysteine (tHcy) levels and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) as well as cognitive function. The results showed that elevated serum tHcy levels were associated with cognitive impairment and the development of CSVD. The presence of different imaging markers of CSVD, especially the severe CSVD burden score, partially mediated the association between elevated serum tHcy levels and cognitive impairment.

Effects of Alzheimer-Like Pathology on Homocysteine and Homocysteic Acid Levels-An Exploratory In Vivo Kinetic Study

Hendrik Nieraad et al.

Summary: This in vivo study investigated the impact of Alzheimer's disease on hyperhomocysteinemia and found that AD-like pathology significantly influenced hyperhomocysteinemia in the App(NL-G-F) mouse model. Immediate normalization of HCys and HCA after B-vitamin intervention suggested a potential preventive treatment option for HCys-related disorders such as AD.

Summary: This study found that hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is more strongly associated with memory impairments in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients, compared to other cognitive dysfunctions. HHcy may have negative effects on spatial and verbal memory.

Association of Elevated Plasma Total Homocysteine With Dementia With Lewy Bodies: A Case-Control Study

Summary: Elevated plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) levels were independently associated with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The association was stronger for DLB than for AD, and future longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the causative role of tHcy in DLB.

Summary: Vitamins B1, B6, B12, and folate were found to be decreased in patients with Alzheimer's disease, while patients with Parkinson's disease had reduced levels of vitamin B12. This study suggests that vitamin levels decrease in dementia cases, particularly in Alzheimer's disease.
