Utility of Advanced DWI in the Detection of Spinal Cord Microstructural Alterations and Assessment of Neurologic Function in Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy Patients

Meng-Ze Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between DWI metrics and neurologic function in patients with CSM, finding that NODDI ODI correlated with pre-operative mJOA, while DTI FA, DKI FA, and NODDI ISOVF were correlated with the recovery rate. DTI FA, DKI FA, and NODDI ISOVF were identified as predictors for prognosis in CSM patients.

Clinical implementation of accelerated T2 mapping: Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging as a biomarker for annular tear and lumbar disc herniation

Marcus Raudner et al.

Summary: The study evaluated GRAPPATINI, an accelerated T-2 mapping sequence that combines undersampling and model-based reconstruction to facilitate clinical implementation of T-2 mapping of the lumbar intervertebral disc. Results showed that T2 values obtained using GRAPPATINI were significantly different for normal discs compared to bulging or herniated discs, as well as discs with and without annular tears. The study concluded that GRAPPATINI can be used as a quantitative imaging biomarker to detect disc pathologies while significantly reducing acquisition time.

T1 Mapping for Microstructural Assessment of the Cervical Spinal Cord in the Evaluation of Patients with Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy

G. Baucher et al.

Summary: This study assessed the potential value of quantitative cervical spinal cord T1 mapping in patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy and found that patients with moderate-to-severe degenerative cervical myelopathy had higher T1 values compared to healthy controls. Patients showed increased T1 values at specific levels, such as C1, C7, and the level of maximal compression. However, patients with mild degenerative cervical myelopathy did not show significant results compared to healthy controls, indicating a need for further multicenter studies.

Identification and Therapeutic Outcome Prediction of Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy Based on the Functional Connectivity From Resting-State Functional MRI Data: A Preliminary Machine Learning Study

Qian Su et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore preoperative brain biomarkers for diagnosing and predicting neurological recovery in cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients using functional connectivity analysis of resting-state functional MRI data. Results showed that CSM patients could be accurately identified from healthy controls and their neurological recovery could also be predicted using support vector machine (SVM) and support vector regression (SVR) in combination with rs-fMRI data. The findings of good reproducibility and generalization across datasets suggest the potential for developing novel strategies to predict neurological recovery in CSM patients using rs-fMRI and machine learning techniques.

Summary: This study conducted an observational study on 52 patients suspected of cervical spondylotic myelopathy, showing that DTI metrics, particularly FA values, can detect myelopathy in patients with mild mJOA scores even before visible changes on routine MRI, thus improving the success rate of decompression surgery.

Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: Insights into Its Pathobiology and Molecular Mechanisms

Ji Tu et al.

Summary: Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy (DCM) is a common and serious neurological disorder caused by chronic compression or irritation of the spinal cord in the neck, leading to neck pain and impaired motor function. Decompressive surgery is the most effective treatment, but timing for the procedure remains a challenge due to poor prognosis and limited understanding of its molecular mechanisms.

Enhanced Information Flow From Cerebellum to Secondary Visual Cortices Leads to Better Surgery Outcome in Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy Patients: A Stochastic Dynamic Causal Modeling Study With Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Rui Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that increased connectivity between secondary visual cortices and cerebellum in DCM patients may compensate for visual impairments. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the cerebellum's connection to secondary visual cortices is related to visual recovery post-surgery, and the EC pattern can predict pre-operative motor function.

Supraspinal functional and structural plasticity in patients undergoing surgery for degenerative cervical myelopathy

Summary: The study aimed to investigate cerebral reorganization in patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) after surgical decompression. Functional connectivity (FC) patterns differed significantly between DCM patients and healthy controls, with stronger FC observed between the cerebellum and frontal lobes in DCM patients postoperatively. Increased FC between the cerebellum and primary sensorimotor areas was associated with neurological improvement in DCM patients.

Effectiveness of Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Determining Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy

Hilal Er Ulubaba et al.

Summary: This study highlights the effectiveness of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in diagnosing cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) in patients with no findings in conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study found a significant negative correlation between spinal canal stenosis degree and FA values, as well as a positive correlation between stenosis degree and ADC values. DTI and quantitative FA and ADC measurements appear to be promising techniques for early-stage CSM diagnosis and determining the extent of spinal cord injury.
