Effect of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure on Lipid Profiles in Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Meta-Analysis

Summary: CPAP treatment leads to a significant decrease in total cholesterol but has no effect on other lipid profiles in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Factors such as age, gender, body mass index, daytime sleepiness, OSA severity, follow-up duration, CPAP compliance, and presence of cardiometabolic disease do not moderate the effects of CPAP treatment on lipid profiles.

Binge eating disorder

Katrin E. Giel et al.

Summary: Binge eating disorder (BED) is a complex eating disorder characterized by loss of control over eating behavior and consuming large amounts of food. It is commonly associated with obesity and various somatic and mental health issues. The etiology of BED involves genetic, environmental, neuroendocrinological, and neurobiological factors. Psychotherapy is the recommended treatment, but further research and efforts are needed for prevention and improved treatment outcomes.

Comparison of Composite Lipid Indices in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Andras Bikov et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of composite lipid indices, including atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product (LAP), in predicting cardiovascular risk in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The results showed that LAP was significantly associated with OSA compared to other lipid parameters. LAP also had the highest predictive value for hypertension, diabetes and ischaemic heart disease in OSA patients, along with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The study suggests that LAP can be used in clinical practice to assess cardiovascular risk in OSA patients.

The Causal Effects of Lipid Profiles on Sleep Apnea

Hongyi Tang et al.

Summary: This study used Mendelian randomization (MR) and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) to investigate the causal relationship between lipid profiles and risk of sleep apnea. The results showed that increased triglyceride levels have independent causal effects on the risk of sleep apnea. This finding was supported by sensitivity analysis and remained stable after adjusting for potential confounders.

Relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea during rapid eye movement sleep and metabolic syndrome parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Takayasu Uchida et al.

Summary: In patients with type 2 diabetes, REM-AHI was found to be associated with systolic and mean blood pressure. No significant association was observed between REM-AHI and HbA1c or lipid profile. The alteration of blood pressure during REM sleep may be an important link between sleep-disordered breathing and cardiovascular diseases.

Overview of OxLDL and Its Impact on Cardiovascular Health: Focus on Atherosclerosis

Anastasia V. Poznyak et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular pathologies are leading causes of mortality worldwide, with atherosclerosis being a chronic disease associated with serious complications. Inflammation and lipid metabolism alterations play crucial roles in atherogenesis, with recent investigations supporting the multiple LDL modification theory. Oxidized LDL may have both anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory properties, triggering inflammation through macrophage activation and other cells.

The increase in clusterin levels may be protective in OSA by blocking the formation of MAC.

The impact of sleep apnea syndrome on the altered lipid metabolism and the redox balance

Branislav Kollar et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with OSA have higher levels of triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol compared to healthy controls, with lower levels of atheroprotective LDL1 and large HDL subfractions, and higher levels of atherogenic small dense LDL3-7 and HDL8-10 subfractions. Additionally, OSA patients showed elevated lipoperoxide levels, indicating a redox imbalance in plasma. These abnormalities in lipoprotein levels and redox imbalance in OSA patients may accelerate the atherosclerotic process and pose a significant risk for vascular diseases.

The effect of acute intermittent hypoxia on postprandial triglyceride levels in humans: a randomized crossover trial

Summary: The study found that acute intermittent hypoxia may negatively affect postprandial TG levels in healthy individuals, possibly due to an increase in levels of denser TG-carrying lipoproteins such as VLDL and CM remnants. However, this altered postprandial TG response to acute intermittent hypoxia was not observed in individuals with OSA.

Contribution of sleep characteristics to the association between obstructive sleep apnea and dyslipidemia

Summary: The prevalence of dyslipidemia in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases with the severity of the disease. In OSA patients, smoking, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), and mean nocturnal saturation are factors independently associated with dyslipidemia. Additionally, sleep fragmentation and increased sympathetic activity may contribute to lipid dysregulation in OSA patients.
