Informative presence bias in analyses of electronic health records-derived data: a cautionary note

Joanna Harton et al.

Summary: The study found that using biomarker values collected at informative and noninformative visits can reduce bias when the biomarker is stable over time, but may lead to substantial bias when it is volatile. Adjusting for the number of prior visits within a fixed look-back window can help mitigate bias to some extent, but not eliminate it completely. Bias may frequently occur in common scenarios and adjusting for prior visit intensity may not always be effective in eliminating it.

Factors Influencing Family Health History Collection among Young Adults: A Structural Equation Modeling

Ming Li et al.

Summary: Family health history (FHH) is important for preventive medicine, especially during college years. This study found that college students have low knowledge about FHH and less than half actively seek FHH information from family members. Racial/ethnic minority students showed higher levels of anxiety and intention to obtain FHH information, but lower confidence in their ability to gather FHH information. Therefore, educational programs targeting young adults, particularly those from minority groups, are needed to enhance FHH knowledge, efficacy, and behavior.

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Genetic Testing at a Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Center

Eloise Chapman-Davis et al.

Summary: Minority patients were more likely to utilize genetic services following a cancer diagnosis and less likely due to family cancer history. There were no significant differences in mutation rates among different racial/ethnic groups, except for higher rates of cancer screening and risk-reducing surgery among non-White patients with BRCA1/2 mutations.

Comparison of family health history in surveys vs electronic health record data mapped to the observational medical outcomes partnership data model in the All of Us Research Program

Robert M. Cronin et al.

Summary: This study collected family health history information through surveys and EHR data, revealing inconsistencies between the two sources with surveys providing more details. Integrating data from both sources can offer a more comprehensive source for family health history, but informatics challenges and opportunities exist.

Telemedicine and healthcare disparities: a cohort study in a large healthcare system in New York City during COVID-19

Rumi Chunara et al.

Summary: While Black patients have lower adjusted odds of accessing care through telemedicine compared to white patients, there is an increasing uptake of telemedicine by young, female Black patients. Additionally, Black telemedicine patients are more likely to receive a COVID diagnosis compared to white patients. Income and household size of a zip code are significantly related to telemedicine use.
