Mental Health Treatment Seeking and History of Suicidal Thoughts Among Suicide Decedents by Mechanism, 2003-2018

Allison E. Bond et al.

Summary: Understanding the differences in treatment seeking and suicidality between suicide decedents who died by firearms and those who died by other methods is crucial for prevention efforts. This study found that suicide decedents who died by firearms were more likely to disclose their suicidal thoughts or plans within the month prior to death, and were less likely to have previously attempted suicide.

An examination of preferred messengers on firearm safety for suicide prevention

Michael D. Anestis et al.

Summary: This study identified differences in preferred messengers on the topic of safe firearm storage and suicide prevention between firearm owners and nonfirearm owners, and among firearm owners of different racial groups and sexes. Law enforcement, current military personnel, and military veterans were ranked as the top three most credible sources for discussing firearm safety for suicide prevention by participants. The findings suggest that the effectiveness of messaging on safe firearm storage may depend on the identity of the messenger and provide guidance on how to consider packaging specific messages.

Altering Preferences for Suicide Crisis Resources Using the Decoy Nudge: Evidence of Context-Dependent Effects in Suicide Prevention Decision Making

Brian W. Bauer et al.

Summary: The study found that introducing a slightly worse version of an existing suicide prevention resource can increase preference towards the slightly better option. This suggests that nudges could be effective in influencing people's preference towards best practices. The results also highlight the importance of context effects on choice preference in suicide research and prevention efforts, as well as hint at irrational decision-making processes in suicide-relevant decision making.
