The heterogeneous mechanical properties of adolescent growth plate cartilage: A study in rabbit

Summary: Fractures in the growth plate can lead to the loss of bone lengthening function. Our understanding of growth plate fractures and mechanobiology is limited by the lack of information on the microscale spatial gradients in mechanical properties. In this study, we characterized the mechanical properties of the growth plate and found differences between different zones, which correlated with the content of extracellular matrix.

Biomimetic and mechanically supportive 3D printed scaffolds for cartilage and osteochondral tissue engineering using photopolymers and digital light processing

Summary: Successful 3D scaffold designs for musculoskeletal tissue engineering require careful consideration of tissue form and function. This study presents a method that separates mechanical and biochemical needs, allowing for independent development of structural and cellular niches in scaffolds. Using digital light processing-based stereolithography, complex structures with varied porosities and moduli are achieved, filled with mesenchymal stem cells and biomimetic hydrogels for guided tissue differentiation. This approach demonstrates the potential to repair chondral defects and support multi-tissue scaffold development for osteochondral tissue engineering.
