Using materials quality factor BΔE* for design of thermoelectric materials with multiple bands

X. Jia et al.

Summary: In this study, an advanced quality factor B*(Delta E) based on the three-parabolic-band model was introduced, taking into account band gap and second band, leading to better predictions of peak ZT values for compounds with multiple bands.

Solubility limit and annealing effects on the microstructure & thermoelectric properties of Fe 2 V 1-x Ta x Al 1-y Si y Heusler compounds

Fabian Garmroudi et al.

Summary: Heusler compounds with Fe2V1-xTaxAl1-ySiy composition have shown high thermoelectric power factors due to band convergence and band gap opening by V/Ta substitution. Investigation on solubility limits of Ta and Si within the L21 phase revealed significant hindrance by Al/Si substitution. Different annealing conditions affect microstructure and thermoelectric properties, with additional annealing leading to phase segregation and impurity precipitate growth, impacting Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity.

Electronic State Unfolding for Plane Waves: Energy Bands, Fermi Surfaces, and Spectral Functions

David Dirnberger et al.

Summary: Modern computing facilities allow for first-principles density functional theory studies of complex physical and chemical phenomena, often linked to large supercells. However, supercells in reciprocal space have small Brillouin zones with folded electronic eigenstates, making analysis challenging. An unfolding scheme embedded in the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package (VASP) has been proposed to reconstruct electronic band structures from supercells to primitive cell Brillouin zones.

Boosting the thermoelectric performance of Fe2VAl-type Heusler compounds by band engineering

F. Garmroudi et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the thermoelectric properties of Fe2V1-xTaxAl1-ySiy compounds, revealing an increase in band gap and Seebeck coefficient with Ta substitution, leading to an enhanced power factor with the highest value reported near room temperature. Additionally, the dominant scattering mechanisms of electrons were found to be fundamentally different between p-type and n-type materials.
