Pushing the limit of 3d transition metal-based layered oxides that use both cation and anion redox for energy storage

Minghao Zhang et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the potential of layered oxide compounds with anion redox as positive electrode materials for next-generation Li-ion batteries. It outlines the mechanisms of anion redox and emphasizes the impact of structural changes on electrochemical performance. The importance of an integrated approach combining characterization and computation for studying the evolution of bulk structure and electrode-electrolyte interphase is highlighted.

Reversible and Irreversible Redox Processes in Li-Rich Layered Oxides

Michael Merz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reversible and irreversible charge exchange reactions of Li- and Mn-rich layered oxides, and demonstrates the relationship between O-O formation in the bulk and reduction/oxidation processes of Ni, Co, and Mn. It also discusses the reversibility of charge compensation reactions and differences between O-O formation and oxygen release during activation.

Delocalized Metal-Oxygen π-Redox Is the Origin of Anomalous Nonhysteretic Capacity in Li-Ion and Na-Ion Cathode Materials

Daniil A. Kitchaev et al.

Summary: The study presents the first consistent mechanism of nonhysteretic oxidation beyond the transition metal limit, explaining the electrochemical and structural evolution of Na2Mn3O7 and Li2IrO3 model materials. The source of anomalous nonhysteretic capacity is identified as a pi-bonded metal-d and O-p orbital network, enabled by a unique resistance to transition metal migration. Voltage, accessible capacity, and structural evolution upon oxidation are shown to be collective properties of the pi-network rather than local bonding environments.

Boosting energy efficiency of Li-rich layered oxide cathodes by tuning oxygen redox kinetics and reversibility

Chong Yin et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the rational design of an energy-efficient Li-rich layered cathode with high energy, power density and cycling stability by tuning oxygen redox activity. The target material Li1.12Ni0.22Co0.13Mn0.52O2 shows ultra-high energy efficiency (90.6%) at 1C, high capacity (>200 mAh g(-1)) with 98.9% retention, and less than 150 mV of decay after 200 cycles. The compositional change greatly improves the oxygen redox kinetics and reversibility, leading to enhanced energy efficiency and narrowing the gap between scientific interest and practical application in oxygen-redox chemistry.

Nanostructure Transformation as a Signature of Oxygen Redox in Li-Rich 3d and 4d Cathodes

Antonin Grenier et al.

Summary: LRNMC cathodes have higher energy storage capacity, but during O oxidation, nanoscale domains of lower electron density are formed within the cathode structure. The observation of nanopores during O oxidation, which is partially reversible, is a common feature in Li-rich systems like Li2RuO3 and Li1.3Nb0.3Mn0.4O2, but not present in traditional cathode materials such as stoichiometric NMC and NCA.

Persistent and partially mobile oxygen vacancies in Li-rich layered oxides

Peter M. Csernica et al.

Summary: Utilizing transmission-based X-ray absorption spectromicroscopy and ptychography, the study quantitatively profiles oxygen deficiency in layered oxide battery electrodes at the nanoscale. It reveals that oxygen vacancies in the bulk of individual particles and their diffusion are responsible for spectroscopic changes. Additionally, the arrangement of particles within secondary particles causes heterogeneity in oxygen release.

Oxygen anionic redox activated high-energy cathodes: Status and prospects

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: The oxygen anionic redox (OAR) has emerged as a new design paradigm to provide additional capacity for high-capacity cathodes, with Li-rich layered oxides (LLOs) being one of the most appealing candidates for future high-energy LIBs. Furthermore, the application of pure OAR can also trigger the emergence of lithium-based sealed batteries with great long-term potentials.
