Electrolyte/electrode interfacial electrochemical behaviors and optimization strategies in aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Miao Zhou et al.

Summary: Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are a promising alternative for large-scale energy storage due to their environmental friendliness, low cost, and safety. However, the understanding of the electrolyte/electrode interfacial electrochemical behaviors, which significantly affect the performance of ZIBs, is still in the early stage. This review focuses on the characteristics and formation mechanism of the electrode/electrolyte interface (EEI) and discusses the various ionic electrochemical behaviors at EEI and interfacial optimization strategies. Practical considerations and future perspectives for manipulating EEI in aqueous ZIBs are also proposed.

Low Current-Density Stable Zinc-Metal Batteries Via Aqueous/Organic Hybrid Electrolyte

Yue Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, high-proportioned polyethylene glycol was introduced as solvent in the electrolyte of zinc-metal batteries, effectively limiting the activity of free water molecules and reducing the occurrence of side reactions. The introduction of this hybrid electrolyte led to improved reversible zinc plating/stripping and cycle stability. The experimental results also demonstrated the superiority of this hybrid electrolyte in both continuous and intermittent electrochemical charge/discharge modes.

Simultaneous regulation of cations and anions in an electrolyte for high-capacity, high-stability aqueous zinc-vanadium batteries

Ziqing Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, high-capacity and high-stability aqueous zinc-vanadium batteries were achieved by simultaneously regulating the ions in the electrolyte. Na+ cations suppressed cathode dissolution and restrained Zn dendrite growth, while ClO4- anions formed a protective layer to decrease Zn dendrites and H2 evolution. The battery exhibited durable performance during long-term cycling.

Defect engineering on V2O3 cathode for long-cycling aqueous zinc metal batteries

Kefu Zhu et al.

Summary: Defect engineering is being used to modify battery active materials for improved cycling stability of electrodes. This study quantified vanadium-defective clusters in the V2O3 lattice and found that the defects lead to favorable sites for reversible Zn-ion storage in aqueous Zn coin cell configuration, resulting in 81% capacity retention after 30,000 cycles at 5 A g(-1). The findings suggest that aqueous Zn metal batteries with vanadium-defective V2O3 cathodes could be a promising system for high-power electrochemical energy storage.

Summary: The study introduces a dissolution-free, low-Zn-preinserted bilayer-structured V2O5 xerogel cathode, Zn0.1V2O5·nH2O (ZnVO), with excellent capacity and stability in a low-cost ZnSO4 electrolyte. The outstanding performance of ZnVO is attributed to the enlarged gallery spacing by solvent water intercalation and the water stable V2O5 bilayer structure. The findings offer insights into the roles of gallery water, solvent water, bilayer V2O5 structure, and dual Zn2+/H+ intercalation mechanisms in achieving high capacity and long stability for ZIBs.
