Solvent Degradation and Polymerization in the Li-Metal Battery: Organic-Phase Formation in Solid-Electrolyte Interphases

Dacheng Kuai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the solvent polymerization and degradation products in the solid-electrolyte interphase of Li-metal batteries. Molecular calculations and molecular dynamic simulations show that ethylene carbonate (EC) and vinylene carbonate (VC) decompose rapidly upon contact with the Li anode. The lithium bonding has catalytic effects in both EC and VC polymerization pathways, and different degrees of decarboxylation are observed. The VC polymerization pathway without ring-opening events has a lower energy barrier and dominates the oligomerization process. VC has higher decomposition and polymerization reactivities compared to EC, and the cross-coupling between EC and VC has an even lower-energy barrier.

Formulating the Electrolyte Towards High-Energy and Safe Rechargeable Lithium-Metal Batteries

Qiang Ma et al.

Summary: By adjusting the composition of conventional electrolytes, a hybrid electrolyte was developed to ensure high stability, allowing both the Li-metal anode and nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes to exhibit good performance. Experimental results show that cells with the new electrolyte exhibit favorable cycling and rate performance, achieving a high specific energy. These findings provide reasonable design principles for the practical realization of high-energy rechargeable batteries.

Robust Solid/Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) Formation on Si Anodes Using Glyme-Based Electrolytes

Guang Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that glyme-based electrolytes can effectively improve the stability and cycling performance of silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries, reducing early parasitic current, decreasing interfacial resistance, and promoting capacity retention. Mechanistic investigation shows that GlyEl enriches the SEI on silicon with elastic polyether while diminishing carbonate species, making it a viable option for future high energy density lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium Metal Batteries Enabled by Synergetic Additives in Commercial Carbonate Electrolytes

Nan Piao et al.

Summary: By introducing lithium nitrate (LiNO3) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) into commercial 1 M LiPF6/EC-DMC electrolytes, an inorganic-enhanced LiF-Li3N SEI was designed to improve the Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency to 99.6% in 100 cycles. This strategy enabled a lithium metal anode cell to achieve an average CE of 99.7% and a capacity retention of 90.8% after 150 cycles, demonstrating high performance in commercial carbonate electrolytes.

Understanding the Roles of the Electrode/Electrolyte Interface for Enabling Stable Li∥Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile Batteries

Zhaohui Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the crucial role of LiNO3 additive in preventing LiSx species from dissolving into the electrolyte, thereby reducing shuttle effect and capacity loss. Carbonate electrolyte forms porous dendritic Li morphology on Li anode, while ether-based electrolyte forms dense spherical Li morphology, proving that ether-based electrolyte with LiNO3 is the preferred choice for stable cycling.

Designing Cation-Solvent Fully Coordinated Electrolyte for High-Energy-Density Lithium-Sulfur Full Cell Based On Solid-Solid Conversion

Huijun Yang et al.

Summary: By designing a cation-solvent fully-coordinated ether electrolyte, the issues with both the lithium anode and sulfurized pyrolyzed poly(acrylonitrile) (S@pPAN) cathode have been simultaneously resolved. Research shows that this electrolyte structure can improve the reversibility of lithium electrodeposit morphology and eliminate the dissolution of lithium polysulfides.
