The influence of soil chemistry on branched tetraether lipids in mid- and high latitude soils: Implications for brGDGT- based paleothermometry

C. De Jonge et al.

Summary: The soil pH has a significant impact on the distribution of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (BrGDGTs) and bacterial community composition. Changes in soil pH lead to variations in the MBT'(5ME) values, highlighting the importance of considering pH changes in paleoclimate studies.

Searles Lake evaporite sequences: Indicators of late Pleistocene/Holocene lake temperatures, brine evolution, and pCO2

Kristian J. Olson et al.

Summary: The study of Searles Lake in California during the late Pleistocene/Holocene period has revealed the geochemical and paleoclimate conditions that led to the formation of specific mineral phases in the sediment. Model simulations suggest that cycles of partial evaporation and dilution strongly influence long-term brine evolution by amassing certain species.

Seasonal origin of the thermal maxima at the Holocene and the last interglacial

Samantha Bova et al.

Summary: Proxy reconstructions show that peak temperatures in the Holocene and the last interglacial period may have exceeded modern warmth, contradicting monotonic warming simulated by climate models. The discrepancy between model results and reconstructions undermines confidence in both, but indicates different climate dynamics between the two periods due to changes in greenhouse gas levels and ice sheet extent. The study suggests that the early Holocene was cooled by larger remnant glacial ice sheets, while rising greenhouse gas levels in the late Holocene warmed the planet. Modern global temperatures may have surpassed those of the past 12,000 years and could approach the warmth of the last interglacial period.

Devils Hole Calcite Was Precipitated at ±1°C Stable Aquifer Temperatures During the Last Half Million Years

David Bajnai et al.

Summary: The study confirms that calcite precipitation in Devils Hole occurred close to oxygen and clumped isotope equilibrium during the last half million years, and that aquifer temperatures varied by less than +/- 1 degrees C during this interval. Therefore, the Devils Hole calcite delta O-18 time series accurately represents changes in groundwater delta O-18 values.
