Modelling and optimization of material flows in the wood pellet supply chain

Ignacio Vitale et al.

Summary: In order to reduce the use of fossil fuels, forest residues and wood waste are considered as alternative sources of energy. However, the high logistics costs pose as a major barrier in utilizing these materials for bioenergy and biofuels production. This paper investigates the optimization of all logistics activities in the supply chain, aiming to minimize the total operative cost and determine the minimum profitable selling price of the produced wood pellets.

Circular supply chains in the era of industry 4.0: A systematic literature review

Emilia Taddei et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the synergistic implementation of Circular Economy (CE) and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) in industrial contexts and its impact on Supply Chain (SC) efficiency and competitiveness. A systematic literature review is conducted to investigate and systematize the knowledge around circular SC enabled by CE and I4.0. The study identifies the major trends in terms of contribution type, LC phases, I4.0 technologies, Triple Bottom Line (TBL) layers, CE strategies, and SC typologies. The results show a predominance of economic and environmental aspects in sustainability, a prevalence of internet of things, big data analytics, and cloud technologies in I4.0, and a focus on reuse-recycle-remanufacturing, waste management, and material/energy efficiency in CE strategies. The paper contributes to building an integrated knowledge of the threefold research context and provides a theoretical framework for practitioners to approach the transition to circular SC.

Biomethane Community: A Research Agenda towards Sustainability

Idiano D'Adamo et al.

Summary: The bioeconomy is an effective solution to address the sustainability agenda and global calls for action. This study focuses on biomethane and proposes a framework to evaluate its implementation based on several criteria. Results show that regulation and energy community are the most relevant factors, with stakeholder engagement being the most important. The case study of the Italian Adriatic corridor reveals the potential environmental and economic benefits of biomethane production.

A multi-objective robust possibilistic programming approach for sustainable disaster waste management under disruptions and uncertainties

Muhammad Salman Habib et al.

Summary: This research develops a two-stage framework to assist disaster waste managers in making effective decisions in a post-disaster environment. The first stage efficiently assesses disruption risk and allocates waste to temporary waste management sites, while the second stage focuses on waste processing following sustainability principles. The findings suggest that social and environmental goals can be achieved at a higher cost.

The role of torrefied wood pellets in the bio-economy: A case study from Western Canada

Huimin Yun et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the environmental and economic performance of global supply chains for torrefied wood pellets (TWP) used as bulk fuel, with a focus on TWP production in British Columbia. The study finds that BC has comparative advantages in TWP production, but faces cost competition from Vietnam and Southeast US due to the high carbon tax. However, BC producers have supply advantages in terms of biomass and clean electricity supply.
