The gut microbiota composition of Trichoplusia ni is altered by diet and may influence its polyphagous behavior

M. Leite-Mondin et al.

Summary: This study found that the microbial composition in the gut of the Trichoplusia ni insects differed significantly based on the diet they were fed, with a diet of Arabidopsis thaliana leaves leading to an increase in microbes tolerant to glucosinolate, and a diet of Solanum lycopersicum leaves leading to an increase in microbes capable of degrading alkaloids. These findings suggest a potential habituation mechanism in generalist insects based on acquiring phytochemical degrading gut bacteria from their diet.

Gut bacterial communities across 12 Ensifera (Orthoptera) at different feeding habits and its prediction for the insect with contrasting feeding habits

Xiang Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, the composition and diversity of gut microbiota in 12 Ensifera from 6 provinces of China were compared, showing significant influences of feeding habits and taxonomic status on the gut bacterial community. The study revealed Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Cyanobacteria as the predominant phyla in Ensifera, with differences in gut bacteria diversity based on feeding habits and unique biomarkers associated with dietary characteristics. The bacterial community structure of Ensifera samples was found to be significantly different from that of Caelifera, indicating that feeding habits and taxonomic status jointly affect the gut bacterial community composition in Orthoptera samples.

Differences in Gut Microbiome Composition Between Sympatric Wild and Allopatric Laboratory Populations of Omnivorous Cockroaches

Kara A. Tinker et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome composition in cockroaches is influenced by host genetics, founder's effects, and host environment. Using cockroaches as a model, this study found that the gut microbiome differs by both species and rearing environment. Transition to a laboratory environment decreased microbiome diversity for both species of wild-caught insects.

Gut Bacterial Communities of Lymantria xylina and Their Associations with Host Development and Diet

Qiuyu Ma et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota of insects play a crucial role in influencing the host's health and behavior, which can be influenced by the host's environment and diet. This study found significant differences in morphological traits and gut microbiota diversity of Lymantria xylina fed on different diets, indicating vertical inheritance without changes during development. The results help understand the impact of microbial symbiosis on L. xylina and offer new possibilities for controlling these bacteria.
