Bending response of sandwich panels with steel skins and aluminium foam core Nominated for Eurosteel 2021 Best Paper Award

Massimo Latour et al.

Summary: The introduction of metal foams in the construction market presents an opportunity to increase the utilization of metal. The development of metal foam and steel composites can enhance the performance of conventional buildings. This paper aims to assess the response of composite sandwich panels made of steel and aluminium foam, laying the foundation for a new system of dry-assembled composite floors.

Flexural property evaluation of web reinforced GFRP-PET foam sandwich panel: Experimental study and numerical simulation

Honglei Xie et al.

Summary: This study focused on the flexural property of PET foam-filled lattice composite sandwich panels under four-point bending. Increasing the thickness of face sheet and PET foam can effectively improve the ultimate load of the panels. Experimental results and theoretical predictions showed errors within 10% for bending stiffness and ultimate load.

In situ L-RTM manufacturing of sandwich panels with PET foam core reinforced by polymeric pins

Rafael de Avila Delucis et al.

Summary: This study investigates a novel methodology for manufacturing sandwich panels using in situ light resin transfer molding, where poly(ethylene terephthalate) foam cores are reinforced with transverse polymeric pins. Experimental and numerical results show good agreement, with pin diameters below 3 mm leading to failure by local buckling and diameters larger than 4 mm causing manufacturing issues related to incomplete pin formation.

Large deformation of corrugated sandwich panels under three-point bending

Fukun Xia et al.

Summary: Corrugated sandwich panels are widely used in engineering applications due to their excellent energy absorption and lightweight properties. This research investigates the mechanical response of aluminum corrugated sandwich panels under three-point bending through experimental, numerical, and theoretical methods. Parametric studies using ABAQUS/explicit show that geometric configurations have significant effects on the deformation mode, peak force, and energy absorption of the panels.

Mechanical properties and energy absorption capabilities of aluminium foam sandwich structure subjected to low-velocity impact

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic behaviors, deformation and damage mechanisms, and energy absorption of aluminium foam sandwich structures subjected to low-velocity impact. Experimental and numerical analyses were conducted to evaluate the influences of face sheet thickness, core height, and density on the performance of energy absorption. The results show that the combination of impact energy and energy absorption indicators play a crucial role in the optimal design of sandwich structures.

Optimized epoxy foam interface of CFRP/Epoxy Foam/CFRP sandwich composites for improving compressive and impact properties

Dong-Jun Kwon et al.

Summary: This study investigated the optimal manufacturing conditions of epoxy foam to enhance the mechanical performance of carbon fiber reinforced plastic sandwich composites for vehicle parts. The study found that the foam cured at 60 degrees Celsius exhibited the most stable properties after thermal aging at 180 degrees Celsius. The performance of the sandwich composites was improved by optimizing the cell condition of the foam.
