Oil Spill SAR Image Segmentation via Probability Distribution Modeling

Fang Chen et al.

Summary: This work aims to develop an effective method for marine oil spill segmentation in SAR images by investigating the distribution representation of SAR images. The proposed method utilizes the probability distribution representation of oil spill SAR images to guide the segmentation process. Experimental evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for different types of marine oil spill SAR image segmentation.

CMSuG: Competitive mechanism-based superpixel generation method for image segmentation

Qianna Cui et al.

Summary: This article presents the development of object-based image segmentation (OBIA) and superpixel generation methods, and proposes an improved superpixel generation method and parallel algorithm to enhance the efficiency of image segmentation. The experiments demonstrate that this method outperforms others in segmenting different types of images, and the parallel algorithm has a higher running speed compared to the serial algorithm.

Management of marine oil spills: A case study of the Wakashio oil spill in Mauritius using a lens-actor-focus conceptual framework

Anish Arvind Hebbar et al.

Summary: This paper studies the management of marine oil pollution in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), using the Wakashio incident in Mauritius as a case study. It finds that significant oil spills in SIDS can disproportionately impact livelihoods and economies, and highlights the unprecedented and comprehensive response by the United Nations to the marine oil pollution incident.

Chronic oiling in global oceans

Yanzhu Dong et al.

Summary: By analyzing Sentinel-1 images, we have provided a global map of oil slicks and a detailed inventory of their sources. Most oil slicks occur within 160 kilometers of shorelines, coinciding with shipping routes. Quantified by slick area, the proportion of anthropogenic discharges is an order of magnitude greater than natural seepages, indicating a potential underestimation of the present-day anthropogenic contribution to marine oil pollution.

Detection of Oil Spills in the Northern South China Sea Using Landsat-8 OLI

Xiaorun Hong et al.

Summary: Petroleum extraction, transportation, and consumption in the marine environment contribute to a large portion of anthropogenic oil spills into the ocean. This study used optical imagery to detect oil slicks in the northern South China Sea and identified their sources. The results demonstrate the capability of medium-resolution optical imagery in monitoring regional oil spills.

Visual Appearance of Oil on the Sea

Merv Fingas

Summary: The visual appearance of oil spills at sea can indicate spilled oil properties, state, and slick thickness. Thin oil slicks (<3 μm) can be estimated based on their appearance, while thicker oil slicks (>3 μm) do not correlate with a specific appearance. Emulsions like water-in-oil and oil-in-water can also be visually detected, providing useful information on the state of the oil.

Detection of Wakashio oil spill off Mauritius using Sentinel-1 and 2 data: Capability of sensors, image transformation methods and mapping

Sankaran Rajendran et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the Wakashio oil spill incident near Mauritius using satellite data to monitor the spreading of the spill and its impact on the coastal environment. Different image processing methods were used to detect and classify the oil spill, and the accuracy of the results was validated through field studies. The study demonstrated the potential of satellite sensors and image processing techniques in detecting, monitoring, and assessing the impact of oil spills on the environment.

Sentinel-2 image transformation methods for mapping oil spill - A case study with Wakashio oil spill in the Indian Ocean, off Mauritius

Sankaran Rajendran et al.

Summary: Several band ratios and decorrelation stretch methods were developed using the spectral bands of the Sentinel-2 satellite to map oil spills, with successful applications in discriminating the Wakashio oil spill off Mauritius. The methods demonstrated the capability to differentiate types and thicknesses of oil spills, and are recommended for use with similar spectral bands of other sensors.
