Summary: Food allergy is a growing health concern in Europe, with a prevalence of 2%-3% in adults. Non-immune-mediated food hypersensitivity accounts for around 1% and can resemble IgE-mediated allergic reactions. A double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge is the gold standard for diagnosis. This study analyzed data from 541 patients with suspected food hypersensitivity and found that IgE-mediated food allergy was more common, with hives and angioedema as frequent symptoms. Non-immune-mediated reactions to food additives commonly resulted in flushing and diarrhea, and additives were the most frequent triggers.

Recent studies suggest that early introduction of cow's-milk-based formulas with intact milk proteins can reduce the risk of cow's milk allergy, while very early introduction followed by discontinuation may increase the risk.

Differences in Classification Standards For the Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity in Children. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased dramatically worldwide. Determining overweight and obesity in children is controversial. This study compared three international classification systems to determine overweight and obesity in infants and adolescents. The results showed that the WHO 2007 criteria had the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity. Most studies found a higher prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity in boys, but when considering the CDC 2000 and Cole-IOTF criteria, girls had a higher prevalence. The review and meta-analysis highlight the need to unify the criteria for childhood overweight and obesity classification. International standards are insufficient, and a working group should be created to establish a gold standard that accounts for geographical region, ethnic groups, age groups, and secular growth.
