Molecular identification and biofilm-forming ability of Elizabethkingia species

Summary: This study re-evaluated 30 archived Flavobacterium meningosepticum isolates and identified them as either E. anophelis or E. miricola using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, ERIC-PCR, and biofilm formation assay. The results showed that E. anophelis had a higher ability to form biofilm compared to E. miricola. Additionally, E. anophelis from tracheal secretions were significantly associated with strong biofilm formation. This suggests that E. anophelis may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of Elizabethkingia infections.

Epidemiology and Characteristics of Elizabethkingia spp. Infections in Southeast Asia

Summary: Elizabethkingia spp. is a pathogenic bacterium that causes various diseases, especially in neonates and immunocompromised patients. Difficulties in accurately identifying the species of this bacterium using traditional methods may lead to an underestimation of the number of cases. The bacterium has an unusual antibiotic resistance pattern, suggesting an intrinsic origin for its multidrug resistance. Preventing and understanding Elizabethkingia spp. infections and limiting its spread is a new challenge.

Computational characterization and analysis of molecular sequence data of Elizabethkingia meningoseptica

Summary: This study analyzed the complete DNA and protein sequences of E. meningoseptica using bioinformatics tools. The results showed that E. meningoseptica has a GC-rich genome with a typical three-base periodicity. The putative origin of replication was identified, and phylogenetic analysis revealed a closer relationship between E. meningoseptica and E. anophelis. Additionally, 18 unique proteins involved in the metabolic pathway of E. meningoseptica were identified, which could serve as potential targets for drug design and development.

Antimicrobial activities of sitafloxacin and comparators against the clinical isolates of less common nonfermenting Gram-negative bacteria

Summary: This study evaluated the in vitro activity of sitafloxacin against less common nonfermenting Gram-negative bacteria (NFGNB). Sitafloxacin demonstrated high activity against Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Burkholderia cepacia complex, Achromobacter xylosoxidans, and Chryseobacterium gleum. These findings provide valuable guidance for clinicians in selecting appropriate antimicrobial agents for infections caused by these bacteria.

Clinical features and outcomes of critically ill patients with Elizabethkingia meningoseptica: an emerging pathogen

Comparison of three species of Elizabethkingia genus by whole-genome sequence analysis

Summary: Elizabethkingia species can cause severe diseases, but research on the genus through comparative genomic analysis is limited. This study identified different species of Elizabethkingia and their resistance genes to multiple antibiotics. Genotype and phenotype showed consistency in some antibiotics but contradictions in others. Virulence factors and associated genes were present in all strains. A significant finding was the spread of a single clone of E. anophelis in a clinical setting for nearly 18 months.

The emerging resistance to TMP/SMX in Elizabethkingia anophelis may be related to accumulated mutations in folP.
