A Quantitative Framework to Evaluate the Seismic Resilience of Hospital Systems

Qingxue Shang et al.

Summary: A framework for quantitatively evaluating the seismic resilience of hospital systems is proposed, which categorizes a typical hospital system and quantifies importance factors for different functional units, subsystems, and components. Seismic resilience is quantified based on probabilistic seismic fragility analysis, and recovery time is calculated considering an idealized repair path. The loss of functionality of the hospital is evaluated by summing the weighted economic losses of all components. A case study of a hospital building is conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Role of hospital leadership in combating the COVID-19 pandemic

Zhaleh Abdi et al.

Summary: In times of crisis management, certain traits, skills, and competencies are more critical than others. Healthcare leaders should be supported by competency-based training courses to enhance the managerial competencies needed to face outbreaks. The COVID-19 pandemic can be seen as a learning opportunity to redefine expectations for hospital leaders and to reconsider training methods.

On the resilience of health systems: A methodological exploration across countries in the WHO African Region

Humphrey Cyprian Karamagi et al.

Summary: Resilient health systems are important for achieving health outcomes. Resilience is defined as the ability to respond to crises, maintain core functions, and reorganize. However, there is a gap between the conceptualization and application of resilience. This study proposes two categories of resilience and calculates the capacities for each category in the WHO African Region. The overall resilience score for the assessed countries is 48.4 out of 100, with lower levels of inherent system resilience.

Building learning organizational culture during COVID-19 outbreak: a national study

Wadi B. Alonazi

Summary: The study revealed that external factors such as system connections, embedded systems, and teamwork had significant effects on building an effective learning organization culture, while internal factors like staff empowerment, dialogues and inquiry, internal learning culture, and continuous learning had a lesser impact. Until knowledge-sharing is integrated into health organizational systems, organizations may struggle to maintain high levels of learning during crises.
