Effect of household's financial literacy on pension decision making: evidence from China's new rural pension program

Shulin Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of financial literacy on rural residents' participation in China's New Rural Pension Program (NRPP) and finds that financial literacy can improve households' participation behavior, promote their current and long-term participation, and encourage higher pension contributions. However, financial literacy does not significantly affect the change in contribution amount. Further analysis reveals the advantages of high financial literacy in rural households' pension decision making, with gender and regional differences in the impact. Effective financial education enhances the impact of financial literacy on NRPP participation and pension contributions.

Risk attitude, financial literacy and household consumption: Evidence from stock market crash in China

Yixing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impact of the 2015 stock market crash on household finances, finding that households holding risky assets experienced significant decreases in financial income, with financial literacy and investment experience not helping to reduce losses. In terms of consumption, households with different risk attitudes and financial literacy displayed significant differences in their post-crash consumption decisions. The study estimates that the crash caused residents' consumption in 2016 to decrease by 87.53 billion RMB, accounting for 0.30% of total resident consumption.
