Urban-rural differences in the association between social activities and depressive symptoms among older adults in China: a cross-sectional study

Summary: This study found that there is an association between participation in social activities and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults, with differences between urban and rural older adults. Interacting with friends almost weekly or almost daily, almost daily participation in community organizations were inversely associated with depressive symptoms among urban older adults. Interacting with friends almost daily, participating in hobby groups almost every week or almost daily were inversely associated with depressive symptoms among rural older adults. Additionally, participating in sports groups almost daily was found to be inversely associated with depressive symptoms among both urban and rural older adults.

The study suggests a need to improve the quality of current workplace PA interventions, with future interventions incorporating a multi risk factor approach and enhancing interventions to improve health and fitness outcomes for this population.
