Summary: The Delta variant is highly transmissible in indoor settings and households. Measures such as rapid contact tracing, isolation of asymptomatic contacts, adherence to public health measures, and increased COVID-19 vaccination, including booster doses, are needed to reduce community transmission of the Delta variant.

Serial Intervals and Household Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Variant, South Korea, 2021

Jin Su Song et al.

Summary: To understand the transmissibility of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, this study investigated the serial intervals and secondary attack rates among household contacts in South Korea. The findings showed a mean serial interval of 2.9 days for transmission pairs and a secondary attack rate of 50.0% among 25 households, raising concerns about a rapid increase in cases.

Summary: This study focused on the analysis of the incubation period and generation time, proposing a consistent estimator for the distribution of generation time based on the incubation period and serial interval, suitable for incubation-infectious diseases. The real case application to COVID-19 outbreak revealed a median incubation period of 8.50 days and an estimated basic reproduction number of 2.96 in the early phase.

COVID-19 Vaccines May Not Prevent Nasal SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Asymptomatic Transmission

Benjamin S. Bleier et al.

Summary: Current COVID-19 vaccine candidates, administered by injection to produce an IgG response, may not fully prevent viral shedding in the nasal cavity, potentially allowing transmission. Otolaryngology providers should continue taking precautions to protect vulnerable patients until further knowledge on mucosal immunity post-systemic vaccination is acquired.

Serial interval and incubation period of COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Muluneh Alene et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the overall average serial interval and incubation period of COVID-19 by combining findings of existing studies. The weighted pooled mean serial interval of COVID-19 was found to be 5.2 days and the mean incubation period was 6.5 days. The study suggests that presymptomatic transmission may account for a significant number of COVID-19 cases, as the average serial interval is shorter than the average incubation period.

Summary: Many new variants of SARS-CoV-2 have been identified as variants of concern/interest due to increased transmissibility, severity, immune escape, and reduced vaccine efficacy. These variants often share similar mutations, such as N501Y and E484K, which lead to partial immune escape, decreased vaccine efficacy, and potentially increased severity.

Summary: The emergence of the B.1.526 lineage of SARS-CoV-2, with mutations such as E484K, has led to its rapid dominance in New York City. This variant is resistant to therapeutic monoclonal antibodies and less susceptible to neutralization by antibodies from recovered or vaccinated individuals, contributing to its fast spread.
