Staffing and patient-related factors affecting inpatient falls in a psychiatric hospital: a 5-year retrospective matched case-control study

Summary: This study investigated the frequency and severity of falls among psychiatric inpatients in Thailand. The results showed that acute psychotic condition, polypharmacy with more than four types of medicines, and use of atypical psychiatric drugs were associated with increased likelihood of falls among inpatients. In terms of staffing, having 26-50 patients in the wards was more protective against falls compared to having 25 or fewer patients.

World guidelines for falls prevention and management for older adults: a global initiative

Summary: This article introduces the common occurrence and negative effects of falls and fall-related injuries in older adults, which impact their functional independence and quality of life, as well as increase morbidity, mortality, and health-related costs. Current guidelines are inconsistent and not globally applicable. Therefore, the objective of this study is to create evidence- and expert consensus-based falls prevention and management recommendations for older adults. These recommendations consider a person-centered approach, the perspectives of older adults, caregivers, and stakeholders, recent developments in e-health, and implementation in resource-limited locations.

Risk of hospitalised falls and hip fractures in working age adults receiving mental health care

Summary: Working age adults receiving mental health care have nearly four times the incidence of hospitalised falls compared to the general population, with borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder presenting the highest risk, and schizophreniform and anxiety disorder the lowest risk. Targeted interventions are necessary to address these disparities.

Hospital Inpatient Falls across Clinical Departments

Summary: The study found that in a urban public hospital, the highest fall rates were reported in the rehabilitation and internal medicine wards, while the lowest were in the orthopedic and rheumatology wards. Most falls occurred in the late evening and during the night, mainly as bed falls. Over the years, there was an increase in overall fall rates until 2016, followed by a slight decline.
