Application of mNGS in the Etiological Diagnosis of Thoracic and Abdominal Infection in Patients With End-Stage Liver Disease

Hongmei Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the etiological diagnosis of suspected complicated thoracic and abdominal infections in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). The results showed that mNGS had a higher positive rate, higher sensitivity, and broader pathogen spectrum compared to conventional culture methods. mNGS has great prospects in the early etiological diagnosis of thoracic and abdominal infections in ESLD patients.

The bacteriology of pleural infection (TORPIDS): an exploratory metagenomics analysis through next generation sequencing

Nikolaos I. Kanellakis et al.

Summary: Pleural infection is predominantly polymicrobial, and different bacterial patterns are associated with patient survival. The presence of anaerobes and bacteria of the Streptococcus anginosus group is associated with better patient survival, while the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterobacteriaceae is linked with lower survival rates.

Clinical relevance of molecular testing methods in the diagnosis and guidance of therapy in patients with staphylococcal empyema: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Suvash Chandra Ojha et al.

Summary: This study found that nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) are currently not accurate enough to replace culture as the primary screening test for staphylococcal pleural infection. However, NAAT can be used in conjunction with microbiological culture when culture tests are not feasible.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

Application of Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing in the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Infectious Pathogens From Bronchoalveolar Lavage Samples

Yuqian Chen et al.

Summary: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples showed high diagnostic sensitivity and negative predictive value for pulmonary infections, as well as an advantage in describing the respiratory microbiome changes in patients with different underlying diseases. This method has the potential to play a crucial role in the future clinical use of antimicrobial agents.

Lung abscess secondary to lung cancer with a coinfection of Granulicatellaadiacens and other bacteria: a case report

Shuo Yang et al.

Summary: This study presents a case of lung abscess caused by Granulicatella adiacens, with coinfection of other bacteria in a lung cancer patient, which is the first reported case of its kind. G.adiacens is a virulent pathogen associated with intrathoracic suppurative in immunosuppressed hosts. Early diagnosis, proper drainage surgery, and more than 5 weeks of antimicrobial treatment are crucial in managing such infections.

Rapid pathogen detection by metagenomic next-generation sequencing of infected body fluids

Wei Gu et al.

Summary: The developed mNGS test using cell-free DNA from body fluids demonstrates high sensitivity and specificity for identifying pathogens, showing potential clinical utility. This method shows promise in rapid pathogen detection and may accelerate clinical decisions by providing high-specificity, unbiased detection from diverse body fluids using metagenomic sequencing.
