Load shifting and energy conservation using smart thermostats in contemporary high-rise residential buildings: Estimation of runtime changes using field data

Helen Stopps et al.

Summary: As the urban population grows, so does the number of highrise residential buildings. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) account for over half of the energy use in these buildings in Canada. Smart thermostats offer an opportunity to conserve energy and shift electricity load through HVAC control modifications. The study tested three thermostat control strategies and found that occupancy-based control reduced HVAC runtime, while load shifting control was not effective at reducing peak period loads.

Study on the suppression mechanism of (NH4)2CO3 and SiC for polyethylene deflagration based on flame propagation and experimental analysis

Yansong Zhang et al.

Summary: The PE industry is rapidly developing, but the presence of PE dust in the air is often associated with unexpected explosions. In this study, (NH4)2CO3 and SiC were used for the first time to suppress PE deflagration flames. The results showed that the flame propagation velocity and acceleration decrease with increasing mass fraction of (NH4)2CO3 and SiC. SiC physically suppresses PE explosions by reducing temperature and pressure, while (NH4)2CO3 suppresses explosions through physical and chemical effects. This study provides a theoretical and practical basis for preventing and controlling explosion accidents in the polyethylene industry.

Effect of the location pattern of rural residential buildings on natural ventilation in mountainous terrain of central China

Mingjing Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated and evaluated the exploration and assessment of natural ventilation in different location patterns of rural residential buildings in the mountainous terrain of China. Through on-site surveys and wind tunnel experiments, it was found that a distance of 12 meters between the buildings and hilly terrain is the best option for building natural ventilation. Using CFD methods, the natural ventilation effectiveness under different location patterns was simulated, and the most favorable location pattern for natural ventilation was obtained.

Effect of simultaneous use of water-alumina nanofluid and phase change nanomaterial in a lithium-ion battery with a specific geometry connected solar system

Jawed Mustafa et al.

Summary: This paper numerically investigates the thermal management of a Li-iNB battery connected to a solar system. The use of a combined cooling system with phase change nanomaterial and nanofluids improves heat absorption, and the addition of nanoparticles and increase in fluid velocity enhance the outlet temperature and reduce the average temperature. The use of a hybrid system of nanofluids and phase change nanomaterial improves the performance of the Li-iNB thermal management system.

Mostafa Valizadeh Ardalan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the unsteady physics of laminar mixed convection in a lid-driven enclosure filled with Cu-water nanofluid. It finds that implementing a temporally sinusoidal velocity on the top wall reduces the required power while decreasing wall oscillation frequency increases heat transfer rate. Additionally, lowering Richardson number and increasing volume fraction of nanoparticles enhance heat transfer rate.
