Efficiency of Lung Ultrasonography in the Diagnosis and Follow-up of Viral Pneumonia in Newborn

Ahmet Oktem et al.

Summary: Lung ultrasonography is a practical and low-cost method for diagnosing neonatal lung diseases, and has become an important tool in diagnosis and follow-up. It is easy to apply at the bedside and provides no hazard to patients.

Lung ultrasound completely replaced chest X-ray for diagnosing neonatal lung diseases: a 3-year clinical practice report from a neonatal intensive care unit in China

Yue-Qiao Gao et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the feasibility and necessity of using lung ultrasound (LUS) instead of chest X-ray (CXR) for diagnosing neonatal lung diseases (NLDs) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting. The clinical data and LUS examination results from 1,381 newborn infants with respiratory difficulty were collected and analyzed. The results showed that LUS could completely replace CXR for diagnosing NLDs in the NICU, with higher accuracy and reliability compared to X-ray.

Specification and guideline for technical aspects and scanning parameter settings of neonatal lung ultrasound examination

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: Lung ultrasound is widely used in diagnosing and monitoring neonatal lung diseases, but there can be variations in LUS images and scanning parameters that affect diagnostic accuracy. The reliability of ultrasound exams decreases in the hands of novices performing POCUS. This study aimed to create guidelines for technical aspects and scanning parameters in neonatal LUS exams to standardize image acquisition.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia in neonates: the role of point of care lung ultrasound

Nora Tusor et al.

Summary: This study suggests that a multiparameter VAP score, including lung ultrasound (LU), is more reliable in diagnosing VAP in neonates with underlying lung pathology compared to using only clinical information or CXR. The LU findings of VAP in neonates showed high inter-rater agreement and included consolidated lung areas, dynamic bronchograms, and pleural effusion.

Hospital-acquired Legionella pneumonia outbreak at an academic medical center: Lessons learned

Michael A. Kessler et al.

Summary: The study investigated an outbreak of Legionella pneumonia at a university hospital using copper-silver ionization for water disinfection. Findings revealed smoking, steroid use, and showering during hospitalization were risk factors for nosocomial Legionella pneumonia. Various mitigation efforts and point-of-use water filters effectively stopped the outbreak.

Severe Pneumonia in Neonates Associated with Legionella pneumophila: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Alba Perez Ortiz et al.

Summary: Legionellosis is caused by the Gram-negative intracellular bacteria Legionella spp, which can range from mild febrile illness to severe and potentially fatal pneumonia. Immunocompromised patients are particularly at risk. There have been few cases of infected neonates reported in the literature, with most associated with water birth or the use of air humidifiers. In recent years, there has been an increase in reported cases in Germany.
