Summary: Patients with systemic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and kidney disease show lower retinal and choroidal vessel density, as well as increased foveal avascular zone area and perimeter. Additionally, factors like smoking status, oxygen levels, and race in healthy subjects are related to ocular vascular changes.

Summary: This study explored the association between retinal findings and COVID-19 infection, revealing retinal microvascular signs in one in nine patients. These signs included microhaemorrhages, retinal vascular tortuosity, and cotton wool spots. Patients with retinal signs were more likely to have transiently elevated blood pressure.

Endothelial Senescence and the Chronic Vascular Diseases: Challenges and Therapeutic Opportunities in Atherosclerosis

Rafael Ramirez et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is closely linked to aging, with cellular senescence, oxidative stress, and inflammation playing key roles in its pathophysiology. Elevated oxidative stress leads to cellular senescence and a shift to a senescent secretory phenotype, activating immune cells and causing chronic systemic inflammation. Identifying senescent cell biomarkers and developing therapies against senescent cells have become important in combating atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis and multi-organ-associated pathologies

W. Coles Keeter et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory vascular disease that affects multiple organs through the modulation of local vascular functions, induction of cholesterol-associated pathologies, and regulation of local immune responses. Understanding the implications of atherosclerosis and its microenvironmental conditions in multi-organ pathology promises to provide new therapeutic opportunities for cardiovascular diseases.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between macular microvasculature and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that older age, male sex, lower VD around FAZ, and lower parafoveal VD of both superficial and deep capillary plexus were significant factors for subclinical atherosclerosis.

Retinal vessel diameters and function in cardiovascular risk and disease

Henner Hanssen et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, evidence has accumulated suggesting that the eye can serve as a unique window for evaluating cardiovascular risk. By analyzing static retinal vessel diameters and recording the dilation of retinal arterioles and venules, researchers can assess subclinical damage to the retinal microvascular structure and function. These findings have the potential to be implemented clinically as reliable risk predictors. Methodological benefits, pitfalls, research gaps, and future directions are discussed in the article, along with the potential use of retinal vessel imaging for screening and monitoring cardiovascular disease. The article provides a comprehensive understanding of retinal vessel imaging, from the anatomical and physiological basics to the methodological approach, allowing for a better understanding of the association between retinal microvascular pathology and the development of cardiovascular disease.

Relationship between Coronary Artery Calcification and Central Chorioretinal Thickness in Patients with Subclinical Atherosclerosis

Jin Hyung Kim et al.

Summary: The study found a significant negative association between coronary artery calcification and subfoveal choroidal thickness in subjects with subclinical atherosclerosis. This suggests that subfoveal choroidal thinning could potentially be a useful biomarker for predicting cardiovascular risk in older patients with subclinical atherosclerosis.

Identification of Subclinical Microvascular Biomarkers in Coronary Heart Disease in Retinal Imaging

Julia Aschauer et al.

Summary: This study utilized non-invasive, multimodal retinal imaging to define microvascular features in patients with and without confirmed coronary heart disease (CHD). The findings suggest that high-resolution quantitative and qualitative microvascular phenotyping in the retina may serve as valuable subclinical indicators for coronary artery impairment. Larger clinical trials are needed to further explore the potential of subclinical retinal microvascular changes as noninvasive, cost-effective biomarkers for risk stratification of CHD patients.

Comparison of choroidal thicknesses in patients with coronary artery disease and patients at risk of coronary artery disease

Murat Kocamaz et al.

Summary: The study compared choroidal thickness in patients with coronary artery disease and those at risk of the disease, finding that patients with CAD had thinner choroidal thickness. Additionally, a negative correlation was found between CAD duration and choroidal thickness, suggesting that thinning of the choroid could be predictive of developing coronary artery disease.

Association of serum apolipoprotein B with retinal neurovascular structural alterations in patients with type 2 diabetes: an optical coherence tomography angiography study

Rui Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between serum apoB concentrations and retinal neurovascular structural alterations in type 2 diabetes patients without clinically visible retinopathy. The results showed that GCL and RNFL thicknesses were thinner in diabetic patients with dyslipidemia compared to those without dyslipidemia, and serum apoB levels were positively related to LDL and TC levels. Controlling serum lipids, especially apoB levels, may be an effective strategy for treating diabetic retinopathy.
