Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in diagnosis, staging, and treatment response assessment of multiple myeloma: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Pooya Torkian et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the role of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the diagnosis, staging, and treatment response evaluation of patients with multiple myeloma (MM). The results showed that DWI had high sensitivity and low specificity for detecting MM, making it a promising tool for early diagnosis and disease staging. Additionally, DWI could assess treatment response and aid in early initiation or change in treatment strategy, which could have prognostic significance for patients.

Summary: Early changes in bone marrow relative fat fraction (rFF) histogram metrics, calculated from MRI examination after one cycle of induction therapy, can help predict treatment response in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma.

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) in oncology: an Italian survey

Domenico Albano et al.

Summary: Based on a survey among members of the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology, whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) is mainly used for lymphoma, myeloma, and prostate cancer in oncologic patients in Italy. There is significant variability in imaging protocols and contrast agent use among different centers, highlighting the need for standardization in WB-MRI application.

Prognostic value of18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Sangwon Han et al.

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis showed that (18)F-FDG PET/CT is a significant predictor for disease progression and survival in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma. The presence of extramedullary disease, more than three focal lesions, and high FDG uptake were associated with shorter overall survival and progression-free survival.

Quantitative bone marrow magnetic resonance imaging through apparent diffusion coefficient and fat fraction in multiple myeloma patients

Sara Berardo et al.

Summary: Objective quantitative MR sequences such as DWI and CSI were used to evaluate the water-fat composition of bone marrow in MM patients. The study found that ADC and FF could be potentially useful parameters for assessing BM infiltration in MM patients, aiding in diagnosis and classification.

PET/CT in Multiple Myeloma: Beyond FDG

Federica Matteucci et al.

Summary: Recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma have emphasized the importance of imaging methods, particularly PET/CT, in providing accurate information for disease localization, prognosis, and therapy response evaluation. While 18F-FDG tracer is commonly used and has high sensitivity, limitations such as physiological uptake in the bone marrow and brain have prompted research on other PET tracers for improved accuracy in multiple myeloma management.
