Sex-specific and dose-response relationships of urinary cobalt and molybdenum levels with glucose levels and insulin resistance in US adults

Jingli Yang et al.

Summary: Growing studies have shown a potential link between metal exposure and diabetes risk. This study used a multiple linear regression model to examine the associations between urinary metals (cobalt and molybdenum) and diabetes-related indicators in a cross-sectional study. The results demonstrated significant sex-specific and dose-response relationships between urinary metals and diabetes-related indicators, suggesting the need for further investigation into the underlying mechanisms.

Yihang Wu et al.

Summary: The pollution situation of antimony (Sb), beryllium (Be), cobalt (Co), and vanadium (V) in urban park soils in Beijing was studied, identifying main pollutant sources and assessing health risks and soil quality standards. Results showed low pollution levels, varying degrees of enrichment for Be and Sb, and different sources for each pollutant.

Chromium Distribution, Leachability and Speciation in a Chrome Plating Site

Jiacong Sun et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the chromium pollution characteristics of a typical chrome plating site, finding severe contamination by Cr with high concentrations of Cr(VI), related to plating processes and affected by soil properties. The results suggest the need for appropriate strategies to remediate contaminated soils and lay a foundation for future pollution investigation and risk assessment.

Distribution of heavy metals and related health risks through soil ingestion in rural areas of western Japan

Kei Nakagawa et al.

Summary: The distribution of heavy metal concentrations and related human health risks were investigated in Shimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Potential heavy metal contamination in an area affected by nitrate pollution was clarified, with livestock waste application and other anthropogenic pollutants identified as the possible sources. High concentrations of Cu and Zn were found in agricultural areas and urban areas.

Application of mixotrophic acidophiles for the bioremediation of cadmium-contaminated soils elevates cadmium removal, soil nutrient availability, and rice growth

Baoxing Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, microbial extraction treatment using a mixotrophic acidophilic consortium was used to remediate Cd-contaminated paddy soils. The results showed that the treatment effectively removed Cd from the soils and reduced Cd uptake in rice tissues. Additionally, the inoculation of mixotrophic acidophiles improved soil nutrient levels and promoted rice growth and yield.

Cadmium and breast cancer-Current state and research gaps in the underlying mechanisms

Kateryna Tarhonska et al.

Summary: Cadmium exposure has been linked with breast cancer risk, but the relationship is inconsistent and may be influenced by various factors. The mechanisms underlying the carcinogenic effects of cadmium are not well understood, with its estrogenic potential being the main focus. However, other mechanisms, such as epigenetic alterations and interference with DNA repair pathways, have also been suggested. Limited evidence from experimental studies calls for further research on the molecular mechanisms of cadmium accumulation and its impact on estrogen receptors, as well as the influence on DNA damage and epigenome in breast cancer development.

Remediation of Mercury-Polluted Farmland Soils: A Review

Deliang Yin et al.

Summary: Mercury bioaccumulation in Hg-polluted farmlands poses a high health risk and requires urgent remediation. Farmland is a sensitive area with active Hg biogeochemistry. Current remediation methods are lacking in terms of safety, efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness for large-scale Hg-polluted farmlands. New perspectives such as environment-friendly materials, assisted phytoremediation, and agronomic regulations play key roles in reducing Hg exposure risk and protecting agricultural sustainability.

Summary: This study evaluates urban pollution near Cu-smelter and ore mining in three towns using magnetometric and geochemical analyses. Industrial and traffic-related magnetic minerals were found to contribute to pollution, with dust emissions posing significant health hazards caused mainly by Arsenic pollution in hot spots. The strong correlation between magnetic susceptibility and potentially toxic elements allows for detailed monitoring and mapping of pollution in urban areas.

Research progress on the effects of nickel on hormone secretion in the endocrine axis and on target organs

Jingjing Yang et al.

Summary: Nickel, an abundant element in the earth's crust, has a significant impact on the endocrine system by affecting hormone secretion and target organs. Excess nickel can lead to dysregulation of endocrine hormones, impacting human growth, mental development, and reproductive ability. Further research is needed due to contradictory data and limited studies on the endocrine system.
