Manganese toxicity disrupts indole acetic acid homeostasis and suppresses the CO2 assimilation reaction in rice leaves

Daisuke Takagi et al.

Summary: Excessive accumulation of Mn in rice plants inhibits CO2 assimilation, carbon anabolic and catabolic activities, and alters stomatal and leaf anatomical development. The deficiency of IAA caused by excessive Mn accumulation suppresses plant growth by inhibiting stomatal opening and leaf anatomical development for efficient CO2 assimilation in leaves.

Application of residue, inorganic fertilizer and lime affect phosphorus solubilizing microorganisms and microbial biomass under different tillage and cropping systems in a Ferralsol

Peter Bolo et al.

Summary: The study found that reduced tillage significantly increased microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) and abundance of different PSMs, while residue addition also significantly increased MBP and PSMs abundance. However, the effect of liming on PSMs abundance was inconsistent between the two years of the study. Fertilizer addition had a significant impact on PSMs abundance in 2016, but this effect was inconsistent in 2017. Additionally, the study showed that different tillage and cropping systems can have variable effects on soil microbial populations.

The Protective Biochemical Properties of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Extraradical Mycelium in Acidic Soils Are Maintained throughout the Mediterranean Summer Conditions

Jorge M. S. Faria et al.

Summary: In acidic soils with manganese toxicity, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can enhance plant host growth by improving nutrition and protecting against environmental stress. The intact extraradical mycelium (ERM) of AMF can survive Mediterranean summer conditions and provide earlier colonization of winter crops. Wheat colonization by intact ERM decreased shoot Mn concentration while increasing the proportion of Mn in the apoplast, suggesting an important role of Mn-superoxide dismutase activity in AMF-mediated mitigation of Mn toxicity.

Managing the functional diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for the sustainable intensification of crop production

Isabel Brito et al.

Summary: This article emphasizes the importance of utilizing arbuscular mycorrhiza in cropping systems and proposes strategies such as maintaining arbuscular mycorrhiza, selecting developer plants, and adopting reduced or no-tillage techniques. By intentionally using selected host plants, it is possible to effectively manage the functional diversity of AMF and enhance crop resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses.
