Abiotic factors controlling germination of the multipurpose invasive Prosopis pallida: towards afforestation of salt-affected lands in the subtropical arid Arabian desert

Mariam Aljasmi et al.

Summary: The response of seed germination to NaCl stress depended on temperature, but on both light and temperature in PEG stress. Germination did not differ significantly between the three temperatures at higher osmotic potentials in both NaCl and PEG solutions, but was reduced significantly in the lower potentials when seeds were incubated at higher temperatures.

Effects of Early, Small-Scale Nitrogen Addition on Germination and Early Growth of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) Seedlings and on the Recruitment of the Root-Associated Fungal Community

David Castro et al.

Summary: The study found that early, small-scale nitrogen addition can increase survival rate and needle carbon content of Scots pine seedlings, while also accelerating the rapid recruitment of ectomycorrhizal fungi to the roots and rhizosphere of the young seedlings.

Plant Diversity Enhances Soil Fungal Diversity and Microbial Resistance to Plant Invasion

Congcong Shen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated positive relationships between plant diversity and soil fungal diversity, especially under plant invasion conditions. The relationship between plant diversity and soil microbial resistance was also highlighted. Unraveling such intricate aboveground-belowground interactions provides important insights into ecosystem functioning and resilience.

Contrasting Composition, Diversity and Predictive Metabolic Potential of the Rhizobacterial Microbiomes Associated with Native and Invasive Prosopis Congeners

Rishabh Kaushik et al.

Summary: This study compares the rhizosphere bacterial communities of invasive Prosopis juliflora and its native congener Prosopis cineraria, revealing significant differences in composition and metabolic potentials, with the invasive species showing higher antimicrobial biosynthesis pathways. The results suggest that the invasive Prosopis species have a fitness advantage due to their rhizosphere microbiome, influencing their invasion success.

Rhizosphere microbiome assembly involves seed-borne bacteria in compensatory phosphate solubilization

Jiahui Shao et al.

Summary: The soil microbiome plays a dominant role in the assembly of the rhizosphere microbiome, while the seed-borne beneficial bacterium Burkholderia gladioli colonizes the rhizosphere in high relative abundance, significantly altering its assembly. This seed-borne beneficial bacterial species may contain extracellular phosphatase-encoding genes, which facilitate functional compensation to promote phosphorus acquisition by the host plant.

Diversity and Distribution of Uncultured and Cultured Gaiellales and Rubrobacterales in South China Sea Sediments

Rou-Wen Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the status of Actinobacteria orders Gaiellales and Rubrobacterales in South China Sea sediments. Gaiellales was found to be the second-most abundant order, while Rubrobacterales were present at low abundance in energy-limited marine habitats. Additionally, four novel marine representatives of the Gaiellales order were successfully cultured.

Candidate regulators and target genes of drought stress in needles and roots of Norway spruce

Julia C. Haas et al.

Summary: Drought stress has significant impacts on seedling establishment, survival, and productivity of plants, particularly coniferous tree species. Norway spruce seedlings show reversible physiological plasticity in response to drought, with changes in shoot water potential and ABA levels. Root and needle transcriptional responses to drought differ, with roots showing more down-regulation of growth-related genes. Comparison with previously studied drought-response genes in Arabidopsis thaliana shows both conservation and divergence in transcriptional response in P. abies, highlighting the importance of profiling both above- and belowground tissues to understand drought response mechanisms in coniferous species.
