Schisandra rubriflora Fruit and Leaves as Promising New Materials of High Biological Potential: Lignan Profiling and Effect-Directed Analysis

Ewelina Sobstyl et al.

Summary: The effect-directed detection (EDD) was conducted to evaluate the pharmacological properties of Schisandra rubriflora fruit and leaves extracts. The results showed that both fruit and leaf extracts exhibited antioxidant activity, with stronger inhibition of lipase and tyrosinase by the leaf extracts, and slightly higher inhibition of alpha-glucosidase and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by the fruit extract. UHPLC-MS/MS analysis indicated the presence of potential anti-dementia compounds in the bioactive fractions. Gomisin N, schisanhenol, gomisin G, schisandrin A, and gomisin O were the dominant compounds in the fruit extract.

Distribution of lignans and lignan mono/diglucosides within Ginkgo biloba L. stem

Min Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, cryo-TOF-SIMS/SEM was used to investigate the distribution of lignans and lignan glucosides in Ginkgo biloba stems. The most abundant lignan glucoside, olivil DG, was found to be mainly distributed in the phloem, ray parenchyma cells, and pith of Ginkgo biloba. The comparative accumulation of olivil DG provided insights into its transport pathways and storage sites in Ginkgo biloba. These findings contribute to the understanding of the biological functions of lignans and lignan glucosides.

A comparative study on the metabolites profiling of linseed cakes from Egyptian cultivars and antioxidant activity applying mass spectrometry-based analysis and chemometrics

Reham Hassan Mekky et al.

Summary: This study conducted a non-targeted metabolic profiling of cakes from four Egyptian cultivars of linseed. A total of 162 metabolites were detected, with the cultivars adequately grouped using principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis, indicating the potential of this approach in origin traceability. Additionally, the study also determined the total phenol content and antioxidant activity, which were in line with previous results.

Arctigenin, an anti-tumor agent; a cutting-edge topic and up-to-the-minute approach in cancer treatment

Arezoo Gowhari Shabgah et al.

Summary: Arctigenin is a bioactive compound found in Chinese herbal medicines that has shown anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and immunomodulatory properties. It can induce apoptosis in tumor cells through multiple pathways, inhibit inflammation in the tumor microenvironment, and downregulate factors related to tumor metastasis and angiogenesis. In addition, Arctigenin can abolish tumor cell growth in nutrient-deprived conditions by modulating MAPK signaling pathways. Further research is being done to enhance its solubility and pharmacogenetic properties for potential use in future chemotherapeutic approaches.
