Case Study: Intra- and Interpersonal Coherence of Muscle and Brain Activity of Two Coupled Persons during Pushing and Holding Isometric Muscle Action

Laura Schaefer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of inter-brain synchronization during coupled muscle action and found that there was higher coherence in intra-muscle, intra-brain, and inter-muscle-brain activity in real pairs compared to random pairs. Furthermore, interpersonal muscle-brain synchronization was higher than intrapersonal synchronization, and HIMA showed more complex control strategies than PIMA.

Happy Enough to Relax? How Positive and Negative Emotions Activate Different Muscular Regions in the Back-an Explorative Study

Clara Scheer et al.

Summary: This study found that negative emotions lead to increased back muscle activity, especially in the lumbar and thorax regions, while positive emotions do not affect muscle activity. These findings further support the idea that emotions can influence subtle bodily expressions.

Adaptive Force and emotionally related imaginations - preliminary results suggest a reduction of the maximal holding capacity as reaction to disgusting food imagination

Laura Schaefer et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of positive and negative food imaginations on the Adaptive Force (AF), finding that under disgusting imaginations, the maximal isometric AF is significantly lower and the AF at the onset of oscillations is significantly higher compared to tasty imaginations. Emotionally related negative imaginations may impair proper length tension control of muscles, suggesting a potential approach to evaluate somatic reactions to emotions.

Paired personal interaction reveals objective differences between pushing and holding isometric muscle action

Summary: The study suggests that holding and pushing isometric muscle actions can be objectively differentiated, with a more complex neural control assumed for holding isometric muscle action.

Assessment of the Adaptive Force of Elbow Extensors in Healthy Subjects Quantified by a Novel Pneumatically Driven Measurement System with Considerations of Its Quality Criteria

Silas Dech et al.

Summary: The study investigated the adaptability of the neuromuscular system to external forces by measuring force and limb position during the application of increasing external force. It found that the maximal isometric and maximal eccentric Adaptive Force are specific and independent parameters of muscle function compared to other maximal forces.

Disgusting odours affect the characteristics of the Adaptive Force in contrast to neutral and pleasant odours

Laura Schaefer et al.

Summary: The study indicates that unpleasant odors may have a negative impact on the functionality of the neuromuscular system, leading to decreased adaptive force and higher reaction force at the onset of oscillations. A functioning neuromuscular system is characterized by proper length tension control and an earlier onset of oscillations during an external force increase.
