Characterizing the spatial distribution, frequency, geomorphological and geological controls on landslides triggered by the 1933 Mw 7.3 Diexi Earthquake, Sichuan, China

Shenghua Cui et al.

Summary: Clarifying the controls of geomorphology and geology on earthquake-induced landslides is challenging. This study investigates the influence of seismic motion on landslide occurrence in the Diexi region, China, where the valley and the seismogenic fault are aligned. The findings indicate that seismic motion depends on the hillslope characteristics of the landscape, with landslides occurring close or away from the seismogenic fault. Thick lithological units contribute to large slides, while thin units are susceptible to smaller slides or falls.

Detection and segmentation of loess landslides via satellite images: a two-phase framework

Huajin Li et al.

Summary: Landslides are catastrophic natural hazards that can cause loss of life, property damage, and economic disruption. In this study, an image-based two-phase data-driven framework is proposed for detecting and segmenting landslide regions using satellite images. This framework outperforms other benchmarking algorithms in accurately segmenting landslides.

Liquefaction within a bedding fault: Understanding the initiation and movement of the Daguangbao landslide triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake (Ms=8.0)

Shenghua Cui et al.

Summary: The Daguangbao landslide, triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, was a catastrophic mass movement with a volume of approximately 1.2 x 10(9) m(3). Laboratory tests revealed that the carbonate fault breccia on the sliding layer had a high liquefaction potential and low friction coefficient, which contributed to the initiation and movement of the landslide. Numerical calculations showed that the landslide occurred 36 seconds after the earthquake and collided with a riverbank in the 76th second, indicating that pore-water pressure during seismic shaking intensified the instability and mobility of the slope.

A semi-analytical model for a compaction-grouted soil nail with double grout bulbs considering compaction effect in sand

Sheng Zhang et al.

Summary: A model for calculating the pullout resistance of soil nail with double grout bulbs was proposed and verified through test results. The study showed that different parameters can influence the pull-out force, and the contributions of the cylindrical surface and curved surface to the pull-out force vary under different failure patterns.

Huajin Li et al.

Summary: A novel tandem hybrid approach is developed to improve the accuracy of wind direction prediction, utilizing a series of techniques including bilinear transformation, data decomposition, LSTM-RNNs, and error correction methods. The approach demonstrated robustness and effectiveness in predicting wind direction, outperforming other single approaches in short-time horizon prediction tasks.

Monitoring and Identifying Wind Turbine Generator Bearing Faults Using Deep Belief Network and EWMA Control Charts

Huajin Li et al.

Summary: Wind turbines are widely installed as a new source of cleaner energy production. A data-driven approach using temporal temperature data for condition monitoring of generator bearings is presented in this paper. Comparative analysis shows that the deep belief network is the most accurate in modeling bearing behavior. An exponentially-weighted moving average control chart and classification models based on LS-SVM are used for trend tracking and fault classification of bearings. The proposed approach has been validated with data from 11 wind turbines.
