Antimicrobial Resistance in Rivers: A Review of the Genes Detected and New Challenges

Paola Grenni

Summary: River ecosystems are vital for the water cycle and provide essential habitats and resources for various organisms. However, antibiotics as emerging contaminants pose significant challenges as they can enter rivers from different sources. The presence of antibiotics and associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can contribute to the development of ARGs in natural bacteria, which can also spread to clinically important pathogens. Unfortunately, the monitoring of antibiotics and ARGs is currently not a priority for national or international water quality control authorities. This study reviews the common antibiotics and ARGs detected in rivers and highlights the need for assessing baseline ARG levels in non-impacted rivers for future environmental regulations. Furthermore, other factors like chemical mixtures, climate change, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on antibiotic resistance are discussed.

Enhancing biogas production from livestock manure in solid-state anaerobic digestion by sorghum-vinegar residues

Jiaxing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of sorghum vinegar residue to enhance methane production from livestock manures during solid-state anaerobic digestion. The results showed that co-digestion of vinegar residue effectively diluted inhibitory substances, improved digester stability, and increased methane production. Cattle manure exhibited the highest increase, possibly due to synergistic effects with vinegar residue.

The Effect of Antibiotics on Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion Process of Cattle Manure

Izabela Koniuszewska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of eight antimicrobials on biogas production efficiency in the anaerobic digestion process of cattle manure. The results showed that antibiotics significantly reduced biogas production, with amoxicillin causing the most prominent decrease. Bacteria dominated over Archaea microorganisms in all samples, and antibiotics led to a decrease in specific genes abundance while increasing tetracycline resistance genes.

Effect of Antibiotics on the Microbial Efficiency of Anaerobic Digestion of Wastewater: A Review

Leilei Xiao et al.

Summary: Recycling waste into new materials and energy presents a major challenge in the future circular economy, requiring advanced methods of waste treatment. Antibiotics have complex effects on anaerobic digestion, with most showing adverse impacts but some promoting the generation of digestion products.

Presence of Antibiotic Residues and Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria in Cattle Manure Intended for Fertilization of Agricultural Fields: A One Health Perspective

Judith Huygens et al.

Summary: The study found that antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistant bacteria are more prevalent in fattening calf slurry than in beef cattle farmyard manure used for agricultural field fertilization. Specifically, higher concentrations of antibiotics like oxytetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and enrofloxacin were detected in fattening calf slurry samples. Additionally, a greater percentage of E. coli isolates from fattening calf slurry were resistant to multiple antibiotics compared to those from beef cattle farmyard manure.

Antibiotic residues in substrates and output materials from biogas plants - Implications for agriculture

Lennart Lehmann et al.

Summary: Bio-based fertilizers such as manure and sewage sludge can contain antibiotics, which may be reduced but still present in the digestate after anaerobic digestion. Antibiotics were detected in a high percentage of substrates derived from animal manures and sewage sludge, with varying concentrations and persistence levels among different classes such as tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and fluoroquinolones. Antibiotic concentrations tended to decrease after digestion, but in some cases, significant amounts were still found in the digestate.
