Preservation of aquatic food using edible films and coatings containing essential oils: a review

Fereidoon Shahidi et al.

Summary: Edible films and coatings are gaining attention in the food packaging industry due to their ability to protect food from the environment and their biodegradability. Films made from polysaccharides have good gas barrier properties, while proteins have excellent mechanical properties. The addition of lipids and hydrocolloids can improve water barrier properties. Essential oils can be added to enhance antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. This review summarizes the components and chemistry of edible films and coatings and their application in preserving aquatic food quality.

An innovative single step of cross-linked alginate-based edible coating for maintaining postharvest quality and reducing chilling injury in rose apple cv. 'Tabtimchan' (Syzygium samarangenese)

Nhung Thi Cam Duong et al.

Summary: By using a single-step crosslinking method with sodium alginate-based edible coating, the efficacy of inhibiting chilling injury and maintaining postharvest quality of rose apple fruits during cold storage was improved. The mechanical and barrier properties of alginate films were enhanced, leading to decreased water vapor permeability and oxygen permeability. Coatings with a higher calcium chloride solution content showed better results in terms of reducing respiration rate, weight loss, malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide contents, lipoxygenase activity, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities, as well as total phenolic content and antioxidant activity in rose apple fruits.

The effect of layer-by-layer edible coating on the shelf life and transcriptome of 'Kosui' Japanese pear fruit

Natsuki Hira et al.

Summary: Edible coatings, such as chitosan/alginate-based layer-by-layer (LBL) coatings, have been shown to effectively prolong the shelf life of fruits by reducing respiration and ethylene production rates, inhibiting firmness loss, and maintaining peel color. Through RNA-Seq analysis, it was found that LBL coatings downregulated genes related to ethylene production and fruit ripening, while upregulating genes associated with the glycolysis pathway. This suggests that the extended shelf life achieved by LBL coatings may be due to the control of aerobic-anaerobic metabolism balance.
