Effect of Coix Seed Extracts on Growth and Metabolism of Limosilactobacillus reuteri

Zhoujie Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of coix seed extract on the growth and metabolism of Limosilactobacillus reuteri. The results showed that coix seed extract can increase the growth and acidifying activity of L. reuteri, enhance the biosynthesis of lactic acid and acetic acid, and improve carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and nucleotide metabolism activities. Furthermore, coix seed extract increased the accumulation of bioactive metabolites.

Spiraea prunifolia leaves extract inhibits adipogenesis and lipogenesis by promoting β-oxidation in high fat diet-induced obese mice

Ju-Hyoung Park et al.

Summary: Spiraea prunifolia has been traditionally used in Korean medicine for its anti-malaria, anti-fever, and anti-emetic effects. This study investigated the effects of Spiraea prunifolia leaves extract (SPE) on obesity using a high-fat diet-induced obese mouse model. The results showed that oral administration of SPE significantly reduced body weight, serum levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, adipose tissue weight, and adipocyte cell size. SPE also inhibited the expression of adipogenesis and lipogenesis related genes, while promoting beta-oxidation through AMP-activated protein kinase signaling. These findings demonstrate the anti-adipogenic, anti-lipogenic, and beta-oxidation effects of SPE in vivo.

Coix seed oil regulates mitochondrial functional damage to induce apoptosis of human pancreatic cancer cells via the PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of Coix seed oil (CSO) induction of pancreatic cancer cell apoptosis. The results showed that CSO induces apoptosis of PANC-1 pancreatic cancer cells by modulating mitochondrial functional impairment and related apoptotic molecules via PTEN, which may be closely related to the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

Polyphenols of cambuci (Campomanesia phaea (O. Berg.)) fruit ameliorate insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis in obese mice

Carlos M. Donado-Pestana et al.

Summary: Polyphenols from Cambuci have therapeutic actions in alleviating insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis in obese mice fed with a high-fat-sucrose diet. The effects include reductions in body weight gain, inflammation, hyperglycemia, and improvement in glucose intolerance and insulin resistance through the activation of Akt and AMPK.
