HMDB 5.0: the Human Metabolome Database for 2022

David S. Wishart et al.

Summary: The Human Metabolome Database (HMDB) has been providing comprehensive information about human metabolites since 2007, and has undergone significant improvements and upgrades in its latest update, HMDB 5.0. These improvements include an increase in the number of metabolite entries, enhancements to metabolite descriptions, new visualization tools, and more accurately predicted spectral data sets. These upgrades are aimed at improving the usability and potential applications of the HMDB in various fields, including human metabolomics, exposomics, lipidomics, nutritional science, biochemistry, and clinical chemistry.

Effect of different post-harvest storage conditions and heat treatment on tomatine content in commercial varieties of green tomatoes

Alessio Pardini et al.

Summary: Green tomatoes are rich in tomatine, which has various beneficial effects on human health. The content of tomatine in tomatoes is influenced by factors like variety, processing, and storage conditions. This study used RP-HPLC-ESI-QqQ-MS/MS to quantify tomatine contents in different tomato varieties stored at various temperatures, finding that tomatine concentration decreased with maturity but increased with long-term storage, mold occurrence, and low temperatures. Additionally, thermal treatment did not affect the total tomatine content in heat-treated green Camone fruits.

Dereplication of phenolic derivatives of three Erythroxylum species using liquid chromatography coupled with ESI-MSn and HRESIMS

Cesar Augusto Goncalves Dantas et al.

Summary: The study successfully identified the compound composition of three species from the Erythroxylum genus using the dereplication method, revealing 55 compounds, most of which were first described in these species and some were new to the genus. Additionally, nine compounds were isolated, including one that was reported for the first time in the Erythroxylaceae family. This research highlights the importance of dereplication in natural product investigations for accurate compound identification and cost-saving in compound isolation.

Combined Experimental and Multivariate Model Approaches for Glycoalkaloid Quantification in Tomatoes

Gabriella Tamasi et al.

Summary: This study used HPLC-ESI-QqQ-MS/MS as the reference method, and employed multiple linear regression (MLR) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) to establish two calibration models for the prediction of tomatine content. The fast techniques of thermogravimetric (TGA) and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) infrared spectroscopy (IR) were proven to be suitable and effective in alkaloid quantification, with low errors compared to the reference technique.

Varietal and Geographical Origin Characterization of Peaches and Nectarines by Combining Analytical Techniques and Statistical Approach

Gabriella Tamasi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a chemical analysis methodology to deepen the knowledge related to the profile of metabolites in selected cultivars of peaches and nectarines cultivated in the Mediterranean area. A comparative study was conducted on yellow-fleshed peaches and nectarines from two geographical areas, analyzing chemical parameters of flesh and skin to identify any distinctive varietal and/or geographical characteristics. Various analytical-instrumental techniques were used, resulting in a model for the characterization of plant matrices that can be easily exported and extended to other types of vegetable matrices.
