Impact of sedimentation, climate and sea level on marine sedimentary pyrite sulfur isotopes: Insights from the Valle di Manche section (Lower-Middle Pleistocene, southern Italy)

J. Houghton et al.

Summary: The isotopic composition of sulfur in sedimentary pyrite plays a key role in reconstructing global sulfur cycling and Earth's surface oxidation state over Earth history, but recent research has shown its strong dependence on local depositional conditions. The chemostratigraphic record presented in this study allows for differentiation of sedimentary patterns and highlights the influence of global and local environmental factors on the sedimentary record.

Sedimentary pyrites and C/S ratios of mud sediments on the East China Sea inner shelf indicate late Pleistocene-Holocene environmental evolution

Xiting Liu et al.

Summary: Sedimentary pyrite and C/S ratio have been widely used as indicators for distinguishing between marine and freshwater environments. However, in unsteady marine environments, pyrite formation is limited, resulting in high C/S ratios similar to freshwater environments. By analyzing core sediments from the East China Sea, we found that sediments deposited before 13.1 ka were from freshwater environments, while sediments after 13.1 ka indicated a brackish tidal flat environment. Although there is an overlap in C/S ratios between tidal flat and inner shelf environments, the presence of pyrite aggregates and fine-grained sediments in inner shelf sediments effectively distinguishes these two environments. Additionally, the development of the mud depocentre coincided with a highstand sea level at approximately 7.5 ka.

Effects of methane seepage activity on the morphology and geochemistry of authigenic pyrite

Xiaoming Miao et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the morphology and geochemical characteristics of authigenic pyrite under methane seepage conditions, finding higher pyrite content and sulfur isotope values in the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ). This suggests major changes in methane flux at site Q6, with anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) occurring for extended periods in paleo-SMTZ layers. These geochemical anomalies indicate that changes in methane flux to the SMTZ are mainly due to dissociation of subsurface methane hydrates.

Heavy mineral record from the east China sea inner shelf: Implications for provenance and climate changes over the past 1500 years

Kaidi Zhang et al.

Summary: The heavy mineral composition and grain size changes in core SS4 from the East China Sea inner shelf revealed variations in provenance, suggesting sediment mainly derived from the Yangtze River with contributions from local rivers. Changes in sediment characteristics were likely influenced by drought/flood conditions related to the East Asian winter monsoon and human activities, indicating a sensitive response to environmental changes.

Depositional control on carbon and sulfur preservation onshore and offshore the Oujiang Estuary: Implications for the C/S ratio as a salinity indicator

Xiting Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the preservation of carbon and sulfur in estuary and shelf sediments, finding that the C/S ratio can effectively differentiate between freshwater and marine environments. It suggests a new mechanism for the influence of physical factors on carbon and sulfur preservation, providing valuable insights into sediment diagenesis related to the global biogeochemical cycle.

A chemical weathering control on the delivery of particulate iron to the continental shelf

Guang-Yi Wei et al.

Summary: The delivery of potentially reactive iron minerals to the marine environment plays a significant role in ocean and marine sediment biogeochemistry. Studying sediment samples from the eastern coast of China revealed elevated levels of highly reactive iron in sediments deposited from chemically-weathered mountainous regions in subtropical or tropical areas. The sediments from the South China Sea indicate a positive correlation between the reactivity of iron and the intensity of chemical weathering.

Early diagenesis of sulfur in Bornholm Basin sediments: The role of upward diffusion of isotopically heavy sulfide

Jiarui Liu et al.

Summary: The study of sulfur cycling in marine sediments is crucial for understanding Earth's surface chemistry. Research in the Bornholm Basin reveals the influence of the thickness of the organic carbon-rich Holocene Mud Layer on sulfur dynamics. Results indicate a close relationship between sulfur isotope composition and sulfate reduction rates, with porewater profiles playing a key role in providing insights into sulfur cycling.

Millennial-scale interaction between the East Asian winter monsoon and El Nino-related tropical Pacific precipitation in the Holocene

Jiang Dong et al.

Summary: The study reveals an anti-phase coupling between the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and El Nino (EN) on a millennial timescale since 5.8 ka, with the intensified EAWM potentially reducing equatorial western Pacific precipitation and favoring the formation of subsequent intensive EN activities. This interaction has implications for understanding millennial-scale climate oscillations and may represent periodic atmospheric exchange between high- and low-latitude climate systems by mediating the EAWM.
