Performance of temperature and productivity proxies based on long-chain alkane-1, mid-chain diols at test: a 5-year sediment trap record from the Mauritanian upwelling

Gerard J. M. Versteegh et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of proxies based on long-chain alkane-1, mid-chain diols for reconstructing past upper ocean temperature and productivity. The alkenone proxies show better correlation with satellite sea surface temperatures compared to the diol proxies, which exhibit a more complicated relationship with wind-induced upwelling processes. Among the diol proxies, the NDI and 1,14 diol-based DCI and DSI show better correlation with upwelling intensity and wind speed, while the DIR, DIw, and CDI perform less effectively. Additionally, the nutrient proxy NDI is suggested to reflect upwelling intensity rather than ocean nutrient concentrations.

A 2-decade (1988-2009) record of diatom fluxes in the Mauritanian coastal upwelling: impact of low-frequency forcing and a two-step shift in the species composition

Summary: Eastern boundary upwelling ecosystems (EBUEs) are highly productive marine regions. Understanding the variability in the Mauritania upwelling system is crucial for predicting future changes in primary productivity. The dynamics of diatom populations are influenced by the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
