Characterizing the Chemical Profile of Biological Decline in Stormwater-Impacted Urban Watersheds

Katherine T. Peter et al.

Summary: Chemical contamination in urban runoff-impacted watersheds is a significant conservation concern, with complex mixtures of organic contaminants that are often unidentified and poorly understood. This study aimed to develop representative water quality metrics corresponding to documented biological degradation along human impact gradients, finding that landscape-scale changes in chemical composition closely align with indicators of biological decline such as salmon mortality risk and loss of macroinvertebrate diversity. Identification of indicators for urban runoff impacts and ecological health can aid in selecting next-generation water quality indicators for watershed management efforts.

Potential impacts of marine urbanization on benthic macrofaunal diversity

Summary: Urbanization and associated human activities have led to changes in natural habitats with artificial structures, impacting coastal marine biodiversity negatively. Artificial habitats like breakwater walls are not suitable substitutes for natural habitats, leading to degradation of biodiversity in coastal marine zones.

Scientific foundations for an ecosystem goal, milestones and indicators for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework

Summary: Efforts are needed to establish an effective ecosystem goal with clear milestones to support biodiversity conservation, Sustainable Development Goals, and climate change mitigation. The ecosystem goal should include core components such as area, integrity, and risk of collapse, with multiple indicators selected for their fitness for purpose. Establishing science-based goals with well-formulated action targets and fit-for-purpose indicators is crucial for reversing biodiversity loss and sustaining human well-being.

Invasive species increase biodiversity and, therefore, services: An argument of equivocations

Christopher Hunter Lean

Summary: Some critics argue that invasion of ecosystems by nonindigenous species can create more valuable ecosystems by increasing local species richness and ecosystem services. However, this view is controversial because ecosystem value is not solely determined by local productivity and biodiversity.
