Future oil spill response plans require integrated analysis of factors that influence the fate of oil in the ocean

Uta Passow et al.

Summary: Future oil spill response plans need to consider the complexity of interactions that affect the fate and transport of oil in the marine environment. Recent studies have shown that oil behavior and partitioning depend on oil properties and environmental conditions. Furthermore, the significance of chemical oxidation and hydrodynamics on the distribution, concentration, and composition of oil following accidental releases at sea has been better understood. Microbial exudates may alter oil behavior and distribution, while observations of oil-particle interactions suggest sedimentation as a factor in missing oil fraction calculations.

Oil spills enhanced dispersion and transport of microplastics in sea water and sand at coastal beachheads

Xiangyang Gui et al.

Summary: The coastal zone is threatened by the accumulation of microplastics (MPs), and oil spills can enhance the dispersion and transport of MPs in seawater and sand. The dispersion of MPs in seawater is regulated by salinity, while the transport of MPs in sand is regulated by Fe/Al oxides. These findings contribute to our understanding of the behavior of MPs in coastal zones.

Oil spills enhanced dispersion and transport of microplastics in sea water and sand at coastal beachheads

Xiangyang Gui et al.

Summary: The study revealed that oil spills can increase the dispersion of microplastics in sea water and enhance their transport in sea sand. The impact of oil spills on microplastics in sea water and sea sand varies in different coastal areas, which can be explained by the differences in sea water salinity and sea sand Fe/Al oxides.

Factors influencing the fate of oil spilled on shorelines: a review

Zheng Wang et al.

Summary: Accidental oil spills in the ocean can harm shoreline ecosystems to varying degrees, depending on the physicochemical properties of the spilled oil. The behavior of oil on shorelines is influenced by processes such as evaporation, photooxidation, partition, and aggregation. The penetration, remobilization, and retention of oil on shorelines are influenced by beach topography and the natural environment.
