The use of membrane bioreactors in high rate activated sludge processes: How and why sludge retention time affects membrane fouling

Ghazale Faridizad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance and membrane fouling characteristics of a high loaded membrane bioreactor (HL-MBR) treating municipal wastewater at different sludge retention times (SRTs). The results showed that membrane fouling rate increased with an increase in SRT. The cake layer, primarily composed of protein and carbohydrate, was found to be the main factor responsible for membrane fouling. The increase in SRT resulted in a higher increase in soluble microbial products (SMP) and a higher drop in particle size in the cake layer compared to the mixed liquor. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) did not change in the cake layer but increased in the mixed liquor. Multiple regression analysis identified SMP as the principal factor contributing to the increase in membrane fouling rate with increasing SRT. Overall, the study found that the system performed best at the lowest SRT investigated.

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) scouring to mitigate membrane fouling: Performance, hydrodynamic mechanism and contribution quantification model

Wenxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of AGS-MBR in mitigating membrane fouling and reveals the scouring mechanism of AGS on membrane fouling. The results show that AGS-MBR has a low fouling rate and higher removal of organics and nutrients compared to conventional MBR. The scouring effect of AGS contributes significantly (39.9%) to mitigate membrane fouling.

Application of UV/chlorine pretreatment for controlling ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling caused by different natural organic fractions

Ying Wan et al.

Summary: The study shows that UV/chlorine pretreatment can effectively mitigate membrane fouling from different NOM fractions. Increasing chlorine dose can further improve the fouling reduction. The reduction of molecular weight of organic compounds and decomposition of unsaturated organic species are the main reasons for alleviating membrane fouling.

Summary: This paper presents a new model for the evolution of the algae-bacteria ecosystem in an outdoor raceway for wastewater treatment. The ALBA model describes interactions among different microorganisms based on mass balances and the minimum-law principle, and was successfully calibrated using collected data. The model effectively reproduces dynamics and seasonal changes, highlighting the importance of paddle wheel regulation in system operation.

Effect of different light-dark cycles on the membrane fouling, EPS and SMP production in a novel reciprocal membrane photobioreactor (RMPBR) by C. vulgaris species

Soroush Azizi et al.

Summary: A novel reciprocal membrane photobioreactor (RMPBR) was designed in this study, and the effects of different light-dark cycles on membrane fouling were evaluated. Results showed that the mechanical membrane revival method could reduce total resistance significantly, and the total SMP concentration increased in the 16-8 light-dark regime. Additionally, the EPSp concentration was found to affect TMP variations.

Effects of coexisting Na+, Mg2+ and Fe3+on nitrogen and phosphorus removal and sludge properties using A2O process

Lanhe Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that when the Na+ concentration was 0.5 g/L and the Mg2+/Fe3+ molar ratio was 3, the removal efficiencies of COD, TN, and TP were the highest at 95%, 89%, and 90% respectively. The distribution pattern of alkaline phosphatase in the sludge was found to be Pellet > tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) > loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPS) > supernatant.

A review on membrane fouling control in anaerobic membrane bioreactors by adding performance enhancers

Weonjung Sohn et al.

Summary: Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) combine anaerobic digestion with membrane technology, offering advantages such as biogas production and potential energy use. However, membrane fouling is a persistent issue that can be mitigated by using fouling reduction enhancers like adsorbents and flocculants. Activated carbon and other enhancers have been applied to AnMBRs to control fouling and promote flocculation and coagulation. This review discusses the impacts and mechanisms of different fouling reduction enhancers in AnMBRs.
