Photoperiod in recirculation aquaculture systems and timing of seawater transfer affect seawater growth performance of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

Trine Ytrestoyl et al.

Summary: The production of Atlantic salmon smolts in recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) is growing, and the use of continuous light has been shown to have positive effects on growth rate. However, continuous light may reduce feed intake and growth during the initial stage in seawater. Fish exposed to continuous light have a larger size at slaughter compared to those given a winter signal. The best performing group is the control group transferred at 100 g.

Time-restricted feeding combined with aerobic exercise training can prevent weight gain and improve metabolic disorders in mice fed a high-fat diet

Renan Fudoli Lins Vieira et al.

Summary: Time-restricted feeding (TRF) alone can reduce weight gain and increase fatty acid oxidation, while TRF combined with aerobic exercise (TRF+Exe) shows additional benefits such as increased oxygen consumption and ketone body production. TRF+Exe also attenuates the negative effects of high-fat diet on insulin signaling pathway and leads to improved liver metabolism and glucose homeostasis.

Artificial Light Pollution with Different Wavelengths at Night Interferes with Development, Reproduction, and Antipredator Defenses of Daphnia magna

Da Li et al.

Summary: Artificial light at night (ALAN) has significant effects on the development, reproduction, and predator-induced defenses of freshwater crustacean Daphnia. Green light inhibits development and reproduction, while seven colors flashing promotes eye development. There is an interaction between ALAN and fish kairomones, which intensifies over time. White and red lights inhibit body length in response to fish kairomones.

Effects of artificial light at night on fishes: A synthesis with future research priorities

Arshpreet Bassi et al.

Summary: Although artificial lighting has provided numerous benefits for humans, it can lead to disruptions for wild organisms, including fishes. Research on the effects of artificial light at night (ALAN) on fishes is still relatively scarce compared to terrestrial species. Most studies have focused on behavior, abundance, community structure, and physiology, with a lack of research on the long-term effects on fitness.

The influence of feeding on the daily rhythm of mRNA expression on melatonin bio-synthesizing enzyme genes and clock associated genes in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) gut

Gopinath Mondal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the presence of melatonin biosynthesizing enzyme genes in the zebrafish gut and their daily mRNA expression profile under different feeding regimes. The results show opposite phase in the daily mRNA expression of certain genes in altered feeding conditions compared to regular feeding conditions, while core clock genes display rhythmic expression patterns in the gut regardless of feeding schedule. Changes in the rhythmic expression of biosynthesizing enzyme genes through feeding may lead to desynchronization in fish physiology.

Summary: Time restricted feeding (TRF) has shown positive effects on body weight reduction and nutrient metabolism in both normal-weight and overweight individuals. TRF does not impact protein synthesis, fat-free mass, aerobic fitness, or muscular performance in physically active individuals, including athletes. More research is needed before TRF can be fully recommended for athletes in sports that require strength and power.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests a possible association between exposure to artificial light at night (LAN) and changes in mood and mental health. A systematic review of observational studies found moderate evidence of a positive association between LAN exposure and depressive symptoms, as well as other mental disorders.

Effects of Continuous Light (LD24:0) Modulate the Expression of Lysozyme, Mucin and Peripheral Blood Cells in Rainbow Trout

Ariel Valenzuela et al.

Summary: Continuous photoperiod in fish farming has significant effects on the reproductive cycle, but it can also act as a stressor and impair the immune system. Our study found that constant light photoperiod can decrease lysozyme concentration and increase mucin levels in juvenile rainbow trout. Additionally, certain blood cell counts were elevated under constant light photoperiod. These findings indicate that artificial photoperiods may induce stress in fish.

Summary: The circadian timing system regulates daily biological rhythms, with external time cues like the light-dark cycle and food intake timing synchronizing central and peripheral clocks. Chrono-nutrition explores the relationship between temporal eating patterns, circadian rhythms, and metabolic health, showing potential benefits for both individuals with metabolic diseases and the general population.

Effects of Artificial Lighting at Night on Predator Density and Salmonid Predation

Thomas Reid Nelson et al.

Summary: The study indicates that artificial lighting at night can increase predation risk for juvenile salmonids, especially in the late night hours, when ALAN attracts more predators, leading to an increased relative predation risk for salmon smolts. Therefore, reducing artificial illumination may be a practical management strategy to reduce predation.
