Molecular characterization of some equine vector-borne diseases and associated arthropods in Egypt

Hend H. A. M. Abdulla et al.

Summary: This study investigated equine vector-borne diseases (EVBDs) in Egypt using molecular analyses, leading to the discovery of new pathogens such as Candidatus Ehrlichia rustica and a new Ehrlichia species. The study also identified a new Theileria species Africa, along with other pathogens in donkeys and horses.

Molecular epidemiological survey, genetic characterization and phylogenetic analysis of Anaplasma ovis infecting sheep in Northern Egypt

Mourad A. Ben Said et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular prevalence and associated risk factors of A. ovis in sheep from Egypt. The overall molecular prevalence rate of A. ovis was found to be 15.5%, with the highest rate observed in Kafr ElSheikh governorate. Statistical analysis revealed that A. ovis infection was significantly associated with sheep gender and tick infestation.

Molecular detection and characterization of tick-borne parasites in goats and ticks from Thailand

Aung Aung et al.

Summary: Ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TTBPs) pose a serious economic threat to ruminant production worldwide. Investigations focused on goats remain limited compared to those for pathogens infecting cattle. This study examined TTBPs from 6 provinces in Thailand using PCR-based surveys and phylogenetic analysis. The results showed a low infection rate of Anaplasma spp. and piroplasmids in goats, and Anaplasma bovis, Anaplasma marginale, and Anaplasma ovis were detected for the first time in goats in Thailand. It was also found that TTBP infections were linked to the rainy season.

The first study on the seroprevalence of Anaplasma spp. in small ruminants and assessment of associated risk factors in North Egypt

Abdelfattah Selim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of Anaplasma spp. in sheep and goats, as well as assess the associated risk factors. The results showed that the seroprevalence of anti-Anaplasma antibodies in sheep and goats was 18.3% and 21.3% respectively. The primary risk factors for Anaplasma infection were age, animal husbandry, acaricide use, tick infestation, and contact with cattle, as determined by multivariable logistic regression analysis.

Comprehensive screening of tick-borne microorganisms indicates that a great variety of pathogens are circulating between hard ticks (Ixodoidea: Ixodidae) and domestic ruminants in natural foci of Anatolia

Omer Orkun

Summary: This study investigated a wide range of tick-borne pathogens circulating among ticks and grazing ruminants in Anatolia, Turkey. PCR-sequencing analyses revealed great diversity of tick-borne pathogens, and 32 different agents were identified in the ticks. Additionally, the presence of Neoehrlichia mikurensis, an emerging pathogen for humans, was reported for the first time in Turkey.

The molecular prevalence, distribution and risk factors associated with Babesia bigemina infection in Peninsular Malaysia

Shola David Ola-Fadunsin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence, distribution, and risk factors associated with B. bigemina infection in cattle in Peninsular Malaysia using molecular diagnostic methods. The research revealed that breed, age, physiological status, management type, rate of de-ticking, and closeness to human settlement were significant risk factors for the prevalence of B. bigemina in cattle. Additionally, the study identified Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Haemaphysalis bispinosa as the predominant tick species infesting cattle in the region.
