Molecular diagnosis and therapy for cutaneous leishmaniasis of a returned traveler from Mexico

Pei-Hsuan Tsai et al.

Summary: Leishmaniasis is prevalent in Southern Europe, the Middle East, India, Africa, and Central and South America, with cutaneous leishmaniasis possibly healing spontaneously but still carrying risks of visceral dissemination. This traveler case highlights the potential global health risks of the spread of endemic parasitic diseases in Taiwan.

Prevalence of Genetically Complex Leishmania Strains With Hybrid and Mito-Nuclear Discordance

Hirotomo Kato et al.

Summary: The discovery of unknown hybrid Leishmania parasites in Ecuador and Peru using PCR-RFLP targeting nDNA, alongside species reported previously, suggests that genetic exchange may occur more frequently in natural populations than previously thought. Comparative analyses of kDNA and nDNA revealed mismatches between genes, representing the first report of mito-nuclear discordance in protozoa, indicating the need for further exploration into how such genetic exchange influences disease progression and transmissibility by sand flies in nature.

The Association Between the Syrian Crisis and Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Lebanon

Nazih A. Bizri et al.

Summary: The presence of Syrian refugees in Lebanon led to a resurgence of cutaneous leishmaniasis, with a significant increase in cases from 2012 to 2018. The majority of cases were observed in patients aged < 20 years, with the predominant species of Leishmania being L. tropica and L. major. Containment strategies and preventative measures are crucial in controlling the spread of the disease.

Clinical diversity and treatment results in Tegumentary Leishmaniasis: A European clinical report in 459 patients

Romain Guery et al.

Summary: Cutaneous and muco-cutaneous leishmaniasis are disfiguring diseases caused by Leishmania parasite, with clinical manifestations ranging from single nodular lesions to disseminated forms with mucosal involvement. A prospective clinical study showed unexpected high rates of mucosal involvement in CL acquired in Europe compared to Latin America, especially in immunocompromised patients. Local therapy was found to be associated with high cure rates in treating CL.

Changes in the microbiological diagnosis and epidemiology of cutaneous leishmaniasis in real-time PCR era: A six-year experience in a referral center in Barcelona

Aroa Silgado et al.

Summary: Leishmaniasis, caused by various species of the genus Leishmania, is a neglected disease prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas, including the Mediterranean basin. In Spain, the only endemic species is L. (L) infantum, but imported cases are also diagnosed. Real-time PCR is an effective tool for diagnosis and molecular epidemiology of the disease. The study shows an increase in both autochthonous and imported cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis, with different Leishmania species being detected.

Summary: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in Greece, showing an increasing trend with a significant burden on young children. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is rarely reported. A sustainable action plan is needed to reduce the burden of VL and prevent local transmission of CL.

Summary: The increase in international travels has led to the presence of leishmaniases in non-endemic areas. This study reviewed consecutive leishmaniasis cases from September 2012 to May 2020, demonstrating the effectiveness of the diagnostic strategy in providing positive diagnoses and species identifications. Travelers in West Sub-Saharan Africa and North Africa should be more aware of the risk of contracting leishmananiasis.
