Alternaria species causing leaf spot on hemp (Cannabis sativa) in Northern China

Hong Cheng et al.

Summary: In 2020, a leaf spot disease caused by Alternaria-like strains was discovered in hemp plants in Wuwei, Gansu, China. Morphological and phylogenetic analyses identified two members of the Alternaria alternata Species Complex (AALSC), one monotypic lineage of A. helianthiinficiens, and a new species named Alternaria cannabina. The new species was distinguished based on morphology and genetic analysis using multiple genes. Pathogenicity tests revealed that the AALSC strains were more aggressive in infecting hemp leaves compared to the other two species.

Alternaria leaf spot of broccoli caused by Alternaria alternata in Bangladesh

Sayma T. Nira et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the pathogen responsible for Alternaria leaf spot on broccoli and evaluate the effectiveness of fungicides against it. The pathogen was identified as Alternaria alternata based on morphological and molecular analysis. The conidia of the isolates had distinct characteristics, and the maximum growth of the pathogen was observed at 30 degrees C and pH 6.0. Tilt 250 WC showed the highest inhibitory potential against the mycelial growth of A. alternata at a low concentration.

Effects of Peroxyacetic Acid on Postharvest Diseases and Quality of Blueberries

Seiya Saito et al.

Summary: Postharvest diseases are a limiting factor in the storage of fresh blueberries, and alternatives to synthetic fungicides are needed for their control. The use of peroxyacetic acid (PAA) has been found to effectively reduce decay caused by fungal pathogens without negatively impacting the quality of blueberries.

Defining a species in fungal plant pathology: beyond the species level

Ishara S. Manawasinghe et al.

Summary: In plant pathology, correct naming of species is crucial for disease control and effective communication. Disagreements in species concept definitions due to new molecular evidence have led to confusion among biologists. It is essential to identify plant pathogens to species level based on multiple approaches to maintain boundaries and provide accurate information.

Stagonosporopsis pogostemonis: A Novel Ascomycete Fungus Causing Leaf Spot and Stem Blight on Pogostemon cablin (Lamiaceae) in South China

Zhang-Yong Dong et al.

Summary: A leaf spot disease was observed on Pogostemon cablin in Guangdong Province, South China from 2019 to 2020, caused by the novel fungal species Stagonosporopsis pogostemonis. The pathogen was isolated and identified using both morphological and DNA molecular approaches, marking the first report of this disease worldwide.
