Identification of Coronaviruses, Paramyxoviruses, Reoviruses, and Rotaviruses among Bats in Nigeria

Grace S. N. Kia et al.

Summary: Bats in Nigeria were found to carry coronaviruses, paramyxoviruses, reoviruses, and rotaviruses. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Nigerian bat coronaviruses are related to other bat SARS-like viruses from Ghana and cluster next to human SARS coronaviruses. Additionally, a broad range of rotaviruses present in Nigerian bats, some of which are similar to human rotaviruses, while others represent novel species.

Metagenomic Analysis Reveals Previously Undescribed Bat Coronavirus Strains in Eswatini

Julie Teresa Shapiro et al.

Summary: The study revealed that 18% of bats in northeastern Eswatini were found to have evidence of coronaviruses. Full or near-full-length genomes were recovered from two bat species. All bats with detected coronaviruses were captured leaving buildings or near human settlements, emphasizing the importance of continued surveillance in bats to understand prevalence, diversity, and potential risks for spillover.

Evidence for SARS-CoV-2 related coronaviruses circulating in bats and pangolins in Southeast Asia

Supaporn Wacharapluesadee et al.

Summary: A study identified a SARS-CoV-2-related coronavirus (SC2r-CoV), RacCS203, in Rhinolophus acuminatus bats from Thailand, with 91.5% genome similarity to SARS-CoV-2, and demonstrated that sera obtained from bats and Malayan pangolin can neutralize SARS-CoV-2.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
